Anyone else spot the mistake in their calcs?
They were calculating the ABV of the Vodka jelly using masses.
ABV standing for Alcohol By Volume
Can anyone tell me the volume of Ethanol/water mix you get if you add 20ml of water to 20ml of ethanol?

Hehehehe..... I say who cares if it sets? Stick a load of straws in it and suck up the lethal vodka cocktail!!

Alternatively... just use decent jelly - I use Hartleys and Ive not made a sloppy jelly yet... but then I do still add water to the mix!

40ml. less about 1 on your measure maybe because the miniscus will be nearly non existent. It wont do anything magic.

Noticably less actually.
Its got nothing to do with the meniscus and everything do with the way the water molecules interact with ethanol. They can slip in amongst the gaps taking up less space than the water and ethanol added together.

Hmm, good point about the uncalled for comment, was in something of a bad mood at the time (women grr.) Thats an interesting point re the water +alcohol mix, i've never observed it (not that i mix alcohol + water often) As i said, the only effect ive seen demonstrated is the change in surface tension reducing the miniscus. Interesting pub fact of the day methinks. How much (ish) does it change?

Its not a huge change and I cant find the exact figures, but my chemistry lecturer told me about it. IIRC adding 10ml of water to 10 ml of alcohol should result in around 18ml of the solution. However that was nearly 7 years ago so I cant be sure thats the figure.
You have to use the purest ethanol you can find for it to work though (IIRC 97 plus percent ethanol) as much more water and the mixing effect has already occured as much as it can so you will observe nothnig unusual.
I've just realised that those figs were supposed to be in the original post but I gopt distracted by work.
