Do you have to Pay/register for Council Tax in a Bedsit?

    Bit condfused on this one:

If you live in a bedsit, who pays council tax?

    Owner? Tenant?

And how does the tenantKNOW he/she is registered in that building?

Cos when they moveto their own place later on, do they just suddenly show up on the CouncilTax?

Cheers dudes.....my brother needs to know. He doesn't KNOW he needs to know yet.....but I KNOW he needs to know.

    if that makes sense!

When I lived in a bedsit 5 years ago, I paid a contribution of £40 a year to pay for council tax. As I say it will be down to your tenancy agreement.
Bored of the old one, new one coming soon

That's right, tax is due on each residence separately and it's the occupier who pays (as they receive the council services...or not.. ).

If it's shared under separate tenancy agreements normally the landlord pays and factors it into the rent.

If it's a shared tenancy i.e. bunch of students all moving in and out on the same dates, then they are jointly responsible but from an administrative angle the council can pick on who they want

If it's a single, self contained residence then he has to pay, but if he's living on his own he qualifies for a 25% single occupier discount (although I can never understand why it's not 50%).
