Pity him, not feel sorry for him, i'm with the others, he may have been a talented football and one the very best, but outside of football i'm afraid to say his behaviour is not exactly something to hold up as a shining example to people.

I don't wish him harm, but i'm not certain he deserves all this publicity either. He's a footballer, nothing more, imo there are many more worthy people that deserve recognition before Best does.

Whenever people mention George they'll put his drinking on a par with his football, so what if he drinks, thats his choice, at the end of the day the guy was a football genius and thats what he should be remembered for, he was never going to be perfect off the pitch, people with that kinda of talent arent saints shame that in this media frenzied world take more note of what happens off the field rather than on...

I think its the percieved requirement for famous people to be role models , which seems a little hypocritical ?

everyone in this thread who's siad he is stupid for drinking so much and you dont feel sorry for him, im sure youve all had your fair share of beer and fags, and can hardly comment. just because hes so famous, does not mean he has to live like a saint...

i might be biased as i eat drink and sleep football, but the day he leaves this earth will be a very sad day for the game. he is one of the all time greats, in some people eyes the greatest footballer of all time, i hope he gets better.

Russ he was given a second chance and blew it, some poor sod died to give him a chance for a new liver, it could have gone to someone more deserving.

Noone is saying live your life like a saint, if you were given a second chance at life what would you do with it? I bet you wouldn't carry on as if you weren't given a new liver.

He will be missed, he was a legend, but you can't help thinking if he dies before his time, its his own fault, I won't be looking up to him anymore, no matter how great he was, he was given a second chance, so why did he screw it up

i work in a hospital, youd be surprised the ammount of cases there is of people who dont value a second chance at life.

This kinda proves my point, so what if he drinks, its his life to do with what he wants, someone died anyway regardless of him getting their liver or not and how do you know someone els emight have died because GB had this liver instead the other person...

You dont, and I'm pretty sure its the drugs that are being used to stop his body rejecting the liver and that have pretty much killed off his immune system is whats killing him not the fact hes still drinking...

I believe alchohol addiction is an illness, we had an alchoholic in the family and i can see it from both sides, it's easy for people to judge, has anyone thought about why he became an alchoholic?, i have every sympathy for George Best i really do, he's spent all his life battling his demons and he deserves some peace

Hmm, I don't disagree that a large percentage of those in this thread have smoked/got drunk from time to time. There may even be some alcoholics/recovering alcoholics here.

However, one must consider that Best has had a priveledged life for the most part. He is able to afford the best care and treatment for his problem, something a lot of other people lack. Also, no one expects a celebrity to be a perfect 'role model', but I hardly think a wife beating womaniser is worth spending so much time over. Hes had his second chance, and third, and fourth; something not many others do.

    Live fast, die young.

He's lived his life at 100mph, clearly. He's without doubt a football legend. He's paying the ultimate price for his lifestyle.

    George Best, I salute you

Bloody genius on the park, waster off it.

I think the man deserves some sympathy for the pleasure he gave to many on the field.

Sadly, I think this particular battle will be too much for him, though I dearly hope he pulls through.
