    How the hell does this work!!!

    It's pretty simple, really.

    If you add together the two digits and take them away from the original number, you'll always get nine times the first digit.

    PROOF:
    We can write a two digit number as 10a + b. We then take away the sum of a and b:

    10a+b - (a+b) = 10a-a+b-b = 9a

    If you look at the symbols, you'll see that every multiple of 9 has the same symbol. However, that symbol is chosen at random each time you load the flash or 'try again', so you tend not to notice it unless you're concentrating.

    EDIT: And, of course, the symbol used for the multiples of 9 appears in other places as well at random, so as to throw you off. ^_^
