    Shoulder problem

I know it's against the rules for people to raise any medical advice so I'm just asking for WHO I should see.

Now, I went to the doctor and spent around £200 to find out what was wrong with my shoulder, I went for X-rays, ultra sounds, checkups with doctors specialising in bones/cartilage/muscle problems and they said there's nothing wrong with my shoulder.

Contrary to belief by the doctors there definitely is a problem, I know this because it causes so much pain I can't sleep at night. In fact, last night at about 3am I had to get my girlfriend to get my some painkillers 'cause I couldn't move my arm at all it was that painful. Today I can't even lift my own arm without causing excrutiating pain.

So, people have told me to see an accupuncturist or a neurologist (as it may be nerve damage). I believe it is nerve damage as when I get a stich I get pains in the same spot, and I suffer from bad stitches when doing anything fitness wise.

Anyone know who I should see? Anyone have any experience/knowledge with either of those professions?

As I say, I'm not asking for medical advice, just guidance on WHO to see.

    Cheers all

try and get a referral to a physiotherapist, they were able to pin point the cause of my shoulder/arm pain to the vertebrae of my upper back.

my only relief i get from back pain is from my chiropractor and massage, the doctors haven't helped one bit over the past 6 years.

Just a post agreeing really.I would goto a chiropractor, I have little faith in NHS doctors these days too, all they seem to do is dish out anti-depressants or some other prescription, to anyone complaining of any problem.

You might also try an acupuncturist(not sure what the proper word would be), I've heard good things about the practise, although I've not experienced it myself.

There are no NHS doctors where I come from

Would a chiropractor do the job if it isn't a bone problem?

Ah didn't realise that, hmm, I have a condition called scholiosis, its where your spine curvers slightly, in a way it shouldn't, I'm not suggesting your problem is mine, but I had to go to the chiropractor alot when I was younger, in order to minimise any troubles this would cause me in later life. So yes, they're main field of work, is bone problems, and also muscle and joint troubles

    As for:

    Chiropractors are quacks.
Thats an utterly foolish view to take. I can understand taking that view of many forms of non-standard medicine, but chiropractors basicly deal with parts of the human body, that doctors(at least in the UK) just don't do a thing about. If you have a reason for saying what you do, at least back it up with your reasons, otherwise don't go insulting an entire profession with such a simplistic insult.

this sounds a LOT like a problem i've had several times - basically fluid builds up in your arm socket (due to an injury) overnight and makes moving the arm painful in the morning - in my case it loosened up as time went on. i was prescribed an anti-inflamitory (voltarine) which seemed to work.. in my case, it didnt hurt if i lifted my arm up using my other arm, only if i lifted it using its muscles, if that makes sence. i've had it happen a few times to me - the worst was when i was driving a car that crashed @ ~25mph, my elbows were locked and all the impact went up the steering wheel, thru my arms into my shoulders..

i found i lost sleep because i kept rolling over, and waking up. i found the best way to sleep was to put my arm under a pillow, straight out in front of me, and sleep on my side, with my head on that pillow. this seemed to imobilize it.

The ultrasound picks up liquids in sockets, there was none and the doctors said it isn't that unfortunately. I just take pain killers, I have a high threshold as well and this is unbearable pain.

It happens every now and again, every few months it'll come back and cause grief for a few weeks at a time. Stupid body!

sounds exactly like mine - i never got an ultrasound, but the high power anti-inflamitories worked a tonne better than any painkillers

Voltarol is actually available over the counter now, so, you don't need a prescription to get high power NSAIDs anymore, however they probably give you crappy doses, I've got the drug for an unrelated thing on the NHS and they recommended 50mg per dose, the stuffs heavy though, so try to take it after meals if you can.

rubish. we have a family firend that is a Chirporactor and has sorted my mums back and shoulder out several times. Physio did nothing and neither did the doctor (he refered her, which is fair. he is generally a decent GP)

You find one case of a person in a medical profession abusing their position and thats supposed to back up the fact that every person who works in that field is a quack?

How many Gynecology cases where doctors have abused patients do I need to find you before you declare them quacks? How about Harold shipman, does he make all GP's quacks? No, I think not.

Maybe next time try learning about the things you speak of.

You do have to be careful when seeing someone like a chiropractor, who will manipulate your spine. They can make situations such as 'slipped discs' worse. I would go and find a decent Orthopaedic Surgeon if I were you, one specialising in shoulders. I think you will find an MRI would really be their investigation of choice and will be much more sensitive to intra-articular problems than either plain xray or ultrasound. Failing that a good rheumatologist may help. It may just need a direct injection into the shoulder itself, especially if it is a 'frozen' shoulder.
    Not around too often!
