    Whisky, which ones??

I will be hitting 30 next year and on the road to long nisal hair and slippers I have just discovered whisky. Whilst at uni I was quiet an accomplished spirits drinker, but with my advancing age I have slowed down to the odd vodka here and there, my usual tipple is a pint or so of Englands finest bitters.

In the past I tried all the usual stuff in pubs but never got on with whisky, then the other week somebody introduced me to a mild flavoured single malt, was rather nice. Last weekend whilst camping in the woods I took along bottle of Glen Moray for company, again a mild flavoured single and loved it, unfortunately by 3am it was all gone, and the snowstorm combined with freezing temperatures forced me away from the camp fire to my sleeping bag. The resulting hangover the following day was quiet a classic, but unperturbed I intend to further research the wide world of whisky.

So question for any whisky drinkers.. Any suggestions on what to try next, dont like the really strong tasting peaty stuff, more in to the mellow flavours

Right of to get in to my pyjamas, put the slippers on and trim my nose hair.

    Cheers all

God no, stay away from blends....awful stuff....stick with the singles and you'll be drinking the finest whiskies in the world (and if you have choice but to drink JW, get Blue Label, but it's not cheap).

If you have a whiskey shop near you (i have no idea if it's just a scottish thing or not :S) then you can try some of them before you buy. They sell everything from your cheap nasty stuff to ones with a pricetag in the hundreds.

im not keen on single malts, i was brought up with them, my dads a malt drinker, and i lost the taste for it by the time i was 16, im a bourbon man myself, i like the jack daniels, jim beam, etc... but if i were to drink the malts, it'd probably be glenmorangie or a nice glenfiddich

Just so you know, the Islay malts are mostly quite peaty, but Bunnahabhain (pronounced Boona-hav-en) is quite light.

You might just try going into a shop and finding a person who knows what they're on about. I've got a mate who worked in oddbins for about 6 years, knows all you could want to know about whiskey, can tell you which years are good, which places have what types of soil and what the whiskey tastes like because of that...everything you'd wanna know.

If you have to go with a blend, JW Blue label is the way to go.

Malts are always my preferred, but I tend to prefer them straight - so no water, lemonade or ice.

I agree about the Islay malts they are peaty, and tend to be the ones available at duty free, but would suggest not ignoring them if you can get a either a sample size, or a small bottle, as everyone's taste is different.

Have you tried the peaty ones and felt they are not to your taste?

Isle of Jura is my personal favorite. Talisker is on my list too, above both Glenfidditch and Glenmorangie. Sorry
