    Question about bank transfers-

    Hi there people.

I was just wondering, if someone wants to transfer money into my account, they need-

    the banks name

    account sort code

    and account number.

But if I give a name that is different from the one on my account (I dont like giving my name out) will this be ok? Do you even need a name?

    Thanks.

IIRC you dont even need the bank name, thats what the sort code is for, you certainly dont need the account name (if youre doing it on line, with barclays at least)

TBH that seems reasonable, what with the bank holiday, staff holidays etc.

All the person sending money needs is the sort code and the account number.

It wont be the full account number as one digit becomes part of the sort code.

The details will normally be in the front of your cheque book btw...

As mentioned just sortcode + a/c number - but some banks insist on more information when you do a transfer (Royal bank of scotland for example wants a name and reference number, no idea if what you put makes a diff tho). OR you can give them your IBAN number (if you know it, should be on your statement somewhere), and they can do a transfer over the counter that way.

I normally give transfers 7 working days to allow for any problems etc before i complain to a seller, it can take that long but normally 3/4 working days are good enough

Just out of interest, why don't you like giving out your name? Makes no sense or difference really (unless your wearing a tin foil hat ), and in fact could make things more difficult for you, if for example the transaction was selected for a random security check, or there was a problem, and you put a false name it could look suspect..

You'll probably find buyers will trust you more if you give them your name...

If banks, like RBoS ask for a reference name, they usually just use that as an easy way to identify who that transaction is too. the online banking for RBoS also lets you enter an optional transaction reference so you know what that particular payment was for.

Just to help with some time scales: I Transfered some funds on the 23rd Friday the money arrived today 3rd.

... Btw Noni you'll give someone your bank details but not your name? If that was the other way round I'd agree
