    Try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD%2BRW

    Specifically:

DVD+RW supports "random" write access, which means you can add and remove files without erasing the whole disk and starting over. You can treat a DVD+RW almost like a removable hard disk. DVD-RW is more like CD-RW. If you want to change something, you have to wipe the whole disk clean and start over. The disadvantage of DVD+RW is that it is more expensive.

    not true

With DVD-RW and CD-RW you don't have to wipe the whole disk, you can just add a session. further more, if you are adding a couple of files at a time you can use something like InCD that will only finalise the disk when you eject it.

there is also a difference in compatability. I believe the different writable DVD formats are more to less compatible in the following order:
    DVD-R
    DVD+RW
    DVD-RW
    DVD+R

could be wrong on the last two though.

In the early days of writable DVDs your burner would only have supported + or -. now though they all support all the formats.

i think what mike wrote means it can overwrite something already burned on a +RW
rather than just adding a little bit at a time and when getting full having to start again.
