I love building my own PC's as i know exactly what parts i have inside and i know that it has been built properly, with sound proofing and airflow in mind. I know that when i have built my own PC i have a decent mainboard, decent graphics card and decent soundcard etc... and not your el cheapo sparkle graphics card. However i hate building PC's for other people, as stated before you become theyre personal IT support specialist for eternity and it can be a real pain in the a**.

I've built my last few PC's myself. The front panel connectors always cause me problems, and I'm so anal I want all the lights doing the right thing so it takes me forever sometimes.

Cable routing can be a right pain too, but I'm slowly getting the hang of that, although round cables aren't as flexible as one would've thought.

oh, and I usually get the floppy cable the wrong way up, not so much of a problem anymore.

Other than that I much prefer building it myself, gives me the satisfaction of knowing I built it, and you can get a much better spec this way, although now the money saved isn't as significant as it used to be.

I dont build PC's for mates or for Family. I point them in the direction of Dell or suchlike.
When they destroy their PC's through ignorance I have RIS and SUS setup at my parents house along with all of the drivers etc for all of their PC's. A rebuild doesn;t take me long for any of them, and they know what happens when they want fixing.

Geeez you must really dislike your friends and family to send them to Dell, i myself would send them to someone like scan or mesh, they may cost more but i know i could trust them.

I'm tottally for building your own computers and say it's cheaper.

However, if you want a computer for work use only, then it would be damn hard to build some of the Dell computers as cheap as they sell them (inc. Keyboard, mouse, monitor etc).

Granted. But that is because they use cheap components.

RIS Is used to enable a network boot to deploy a system image.
SUS is used like a local windows update server to keep a group of machine upto date.

At the end of the day it depends on what the machien is going to be used for. I gave up offering to build machines for people a long time ago because they will let you spend ages specifying the machine then complain because they have seen somethign which looks like the same ( spec - but isn't ) in the paper ( dell / e-machines etc. )

The advatage of a prebuilt one form a major manufacturer is the warrenty in many cases ( and you get nice chaps like the Mesh or Scan boys to talk to when it goes wrong )

I can only think of a few situations where you will reaure a custom build workstation. The rest of the time off the shelf is fine.

Well, i build for people now and again and if they ask for something specific then it is best i do it. If it is for a more general pc build then i head them towards Scan etc.

I much prefer building them, in fact I have just cashed in a £650 cheque which is money to buy components to build someone a machine. All I do is point out to them that I am NOT Dell/Scan/Mesh or whoever and therefor not on 24/7 call out as I have a life (granted most of it is spent in the pub) and will get onto it as soon as possible. Most are happy with this. Plus most people I do work for work where I do so I have an office I can look at things for them.

As for when it all goes horribly wrong? Give them a Norton Ghost CD of the machine just after you built it and keep a copy for yourself. Problem solved, explain to them before about how to treat a machine and all should be fine. Oh and I refuse to do internet connections without using a router, saves on being bombarded with spyware/trojans etc.

After saying all this, what is my current machine? A Dell Optiplex 620. Oh well got it on the cheap from work and it is silent and fits in with my HiFi. and it is fast (has an X800 I put in it).

Im always open to helping people with PCs. As im young, it always helps to provide me with more experience when dealing with faultfinding, and also speccing up machines, and learning about parts.

When I build them for people, its also a good time to try different parts and test them for yourself, and experiment with different combos of parts to see how they perform.

I hate having to build them, and replace parts at college, its always crappy old parts, and we are treated like idiots who have never seen hardware, despite us being on a computing course lol

My Grandad is also the worst person to know that you know about computers. I can say literally say that I will get a phone call of him around 2-3 times a week. It ranges from Cds not burning properly, to his net being slow, he will phone with ANYTHING. Even while I was ill in bed lol.

The being the Support guy is a downfall to it.

Skii....mate...I try not to get involved....but I have too. I cant help it. I want to play with new toys

To be honest building other peoples is normallyless stressful than my own.

I get them round to my house for a weekend, show them what goes where, and make them do it. Have done that twice recently....one reinstall and upgrade...one full build

Tbh both went much better than I'd have hoped AND both new owners are MUCH clearer on just what to expect of it (software and hardware issues)

    BUT PREVIOUS ONES......OH MATE

    You found a case yet?
