I've never printed on a CD before, any tips?

I need to design the print that will go on a CD face for a project. The actual printing will be done by someone else but i need to provide the image or file to be printed on it. But i've never done it before so if anyone can point me in the right direction?

Do i just get a template on photoshop? Or do i need some specialst program?

I use Accoustica cd label maker, mainly for its text effects. I normally make the background image in photoshop and then import into accoustica.

What i dont get is what does a CD-compaitible printer actually need in order to print to CD? What kind of file does it read off? Is it just a square jpg file with enough resolution?

Depends a lot on the printer, my epson R220 can take any A4 file, and print it on the CD, it does this by printing the section that overlaps the CD only.

What printer is it your using?

I presume that you (or your friend) does have a printer that supports printing onto CDs firstly... Usually its a inkjet with a tray into which you place the CD.
Secondly you MUST use printable CD/DVD discs or stickers(then any printer will do.)

And lastly, (based on LabelPrint with the Canon ip5200 and many other labeling software) you can import images onto a template on screen. Whichever object isn't within the shown circle simply won't be printed.
    Woohoo now Assistant Manager!
