AND I have 8 litre lungs...so the more you can take in one go the more you have in store...

But that doesn't explain me, I'm unfit (to an extent, though I bike about 8 miles every day) and I'm overweight too....

ok, well you just said it - you are unfit therefore your body can only tolerate a limited period of time without oxygen before it starts to scream out for more.
secondly it is entirely possible that you are UNABLE to draw in a sufficiently large quantity of air to sustain yourself beyond a few seconds. your lungs simply cannot do it.
lastly if you're overweight...get some exercise and go on a diet.

Ofr course, the really fun thing when diving is to take a breath from your tanks at 30metres and hold your breath while you come to the surface.

At 30 metres ambient pressure is 4 bar, and at the surface it's 1 bar. The air in your lungs expands by a factor of 4 and you can get the rest.

the word you're looking for teepee is 'pop'...

I went to the navy's 30m dive tank in portsmouth where they did a simple yet effective test on gas expansion with a balloon...great fun!

Over 2:45 minutes relaxed, just under 2 underwater, both times using hyperventilation, and both times, not my full potential (I started worrying about the relaxed one, that I wasn't feeling any CO2 build-up, gave up). Of course, I'd never use it for diving - people have drowned from doing so. Also, when doing it underwater, there were others next to me, timing me. Safety is good. Lastly, I'm unfit, never was an athlete and have never smoked. Probably just big lungs. :>
