It's not like if you post something offensive you can't remove it by editing it, so I can't see the point in not being permitted to delete a post.

That is down to the discression of the admins/mods. Just in case people abuse it, which some probably will. The admins/mods should delete double posts, its their job. Ours is to post sensible things.
I guess you're right flanders, but on the forum I mod it saves me a job when they delete their own double posts!
Still, to be fair - half of them don't so I (or another mod) do it anyway.
