Ok, so week 1 is over. Met with the gym manageress and worked out a program, didn't seem to harsh at the time. Tried for the body fat percentage thing but the machine said I weighed ERROR which didn't really seem to be on the chart anywhere so goal number 1 is to actually register on the scales properly.

Come time to put it into practice, by GOD I was suffering at the end! I hurt all over! Tip for those who haven't done it: cross trainers are EVIL little buggers!

The hot shower afterwards helped though, I felt rather self conscious but I'm not going to let a little thing like that get in the way of The Plan(tm).

Driving home on both occasions I felt more alive than I usually do, kinda feels good to be doing something about my size.

Outside the gym there's been big improvements as well, it's been over a week since chocolate has passed my lips and instead of KFC lunch has consisted of a low fat cheese/chicken (delete as appropriate) salad sandwich and some grapes. Random chocolate/crisp munching has been replaced by apples.

I've started doing breakfast as well, one of those macrobiotic yoghurt drink thingies and a healthy breakfast bar (I'm still too crap on a morning to be able to do the proper sit down breakfast thing).

Also been drinking more water (clunk: the gym were big on that too), sometimes difficult to actually drink that much in a day but I'm trying.

Thanks again for all the good luck wishes, things are going well so far

Best two bits of advice I ever heard for getting fit/loosing weight

    1) Drink a couple of strong cups of coffee about an hour before going to the gym...the caffine gets your heart rate up and powers you through the strain, ensuring your muscles are working harder, and it takes longer to tire. Just remember not to overdo it, and yes, you're really going to feel it the day after.

    2) Switch up from 3 meals (or down from 6 if you're still there) to five meals a day. Five light meals. Keeps your sugar levels balanced and means you're less inclined to binge.

One of these days I'm going to put them into practise and get into shape . I've just signed up for a scuba taster session, so if that goes well I'll get back into swimming, which is great for general fitness and muscle tone.

Good luck on all fronts btw. Wish I had the time to learn how to fly.

Well done with your progress so far.

I am on the same road as you atm, have lost 2 and a bit stone so far and with my hands/wrists all healed up (from my bike accident, messed up some wristbones and the heels of my hands) its back into training.

I can honestly say that swimming is far and away the most enjoyable part of my exercise plan. Before I started I had an iffy shoulder, swimming has brought it up as strong as my other one and has really increased my upper body strength.

The stepping machine still owns me though, my fault for making it the last piece of equipment, feel the burn

Biggest lifestyle changes I made were simple, no carbonated drinks. fruit, museli/granola and yoghurt for breakfast instead of toast and crumpets covered in butter and although I don't calorie count its fairly easy to tell whats going to be beneficial and whats going to put the fat back on. My only sweet indulgence are those small packs of haribo starmix. Gotta love the jellied chemicals.
