    Scam E-mails... gone wrong.

    Just got an E-mail...

Due to upcoming year 2006, and recent changes in PayPal's Service Agreement you need to submit additional details on your PayPal account. Starting from 2006 all PayPal accounts will come with complete detailed information! Identity protection matters. And PayPal works day and night to help keep your identity safe.
One small problem, I don't have a paypal account

Ahhh you see, obviously someone's stolen your identity to create that original Paypal account...I'd get to that site ASAP and enter all your card details, in the interests of security....

Hmmm a friend of mine got that email and asked me what i thought about it since she doesnt have a paypal account. She emailed them thinking someone may have got her credit card details and made an account based upon them. The reply she got from them was as follows:

You Won eBay Item: DVD + WIRELESS HP laptop notebook computer labtop ~THIN (6899932082)

    EBAY SECURITY NOTIFICATION
    Security Service!

    Dear ??????????????

When people break our policies, violate consumer trust and the law of the land, eBay and PayPal work with law enforcement throughout the world to apprehend and prosecute fraudsters. Our diligence in this area is evidenced by the arrests that are made and the trust that is built both within the community and with law enforcement. Most importantly, we do this without compromising our commitment to our member's privacy. eBay, Inc., has established a Fraud Investigations Team (FIT) to promote safe use of our platforms, and to collaborate with law enforcement throughout the world to enforce policies, prosecute fraudsters and help keep our Community safe.

    Valued eBay Member,

We are contacting you to remind you that on 08 JUN 2006 we identified some unusual activity in your account coming from a foreign IP address :capitol.guatemala-203-pc.in ( IP address located in India ) . We have been notified that a card associated with your account has been reported as lost or stolen and involved in fraudulent transactions, or that there were additional problems with your card. According to our site policy you will have to confirm that you are the real owner of the eBay account by completing the following form or else your account will be marked as fraudulent , and will remain open for investigation. You will pay for the fees wich will result from the financial transactions between eBay and FIT ( Fraud Investigations Team ) .

    -----------------------------------------

What do you think that is about? she doesnt even have an ebay account so maybe someone really has got her details, what do you think?

Another thing is i didnt recieve this email yet i have a paypal account which makes me think its fake. (sorry this post is so long )

I'd make sure that the email is from @paypal.com or @ebay.com first. If it's anything else, I'd be even more suspicious; tell her to be cautious anyway, and never give her details if asked in an email. If it does seem legitimate, make sure she uses her browser to go to the site in question, nut a supplied link.

Also, if she has been defrauded (or still thinks she has), she should contact her credit card company and handle it through them.

htid, that email is definitely fake. This proves that beyond doubt: http://www.scamdex.com/phpBB/viewtop...dc189ddc024bdb

To tell whether an email is a scam you really just have to take a minute and look closely at the language, grammar and spelling. The majority of these fraud emails originate in Nigeria and these people regularly make mistakes in their emails that a serious company, such as eBay, would never make.

Simple things like capitals in odd places:
    keep our Community safe
    Bad spelling:
You will pay for the fees wich
Then there is the extensive use of commas:
    eBay, Inc.,
    fraudulent , and will
    Bad grammar:
work with law enforcement throughout the world
Repetition of that bad grammar throughout the email:
collaborate with law enforcement throughout the world
    community and with law enforcement.
Finally, what stands out most for me is the language used. When looking at these types of emails you have to ask yourself whether such a large company would really use the following language in their customer emails:

    fraudsters
    Definitely a slang term
    safe use of our platforms
eBay provides a service not platforms!

Edit: Forgot to add that this really sticks out like a sore thumb.
You will pay for the fees wich will result from the financial transactions between eBay and FIT ( Fraud Investigations Team )
(Sorry for the long post guys! )
