Newcastle Brown - Gone nasty.

Are there any other drinkers of this fine bevvie that have noticed its taste has totally changed lately? It seems to be the Alan Shearer bottles thats its affecting. According to a pub owner its cause theyve changed where its brewed

They used to do a Newcastle Amber too but I've only seen that in Tyneside.

i used to work at a bar which sold Beamish Black it was sensational the reason i started drinking Stout, down in the depths of Wales though its pretty hard to come by, im lucky if i can find somewhere which sells Murphy's

I really quite like the taste of Newcastle Brown, but with exams/work, I haven't actually managed to get a bottle in for a few months now .
I'll try and pick some up in the next week or so, purely for experimental reasons of course...
And it wouldn't be fair unless I took the weighted average of, say, 20 bottles now...

Theres 2 things affecting the beer here really...

1) As you get older - everything starts tasting worse
2) Movement of production of the beers from their Native place to somewhere else where the water has a higher/lower hardness which affects the taste.

1. no thats not it, i asked for one of the older bottles today and it was back to taste heaven.

If the older ones are better, then water hardness/softness could be the case.

Tap water down south - well past Watford to me tastes disgusting and doesn't seem the same as the water here in the Northwest.

When Boddingtons moved from the brewery in Manchester to another location there was a change too in flavour which caused a few folks in Manchester to complain about it and even my uncles changed from Boddies to John Smiths because of this.

Yup it's a shame it's no longer the cream of manchester :*( My drinking tastes have changed more towards caffreys now anyway, plus boddies is hard to come by out here anyway

You're also right about the water Lee - obviously it varies accross the country, but I love the tap water in the NW, and when I have to go to stafford for uni term time (which is in the midlands, therefore more southern) I loath to drink the tap water - its horrible, and gives you furry kettles heh. So I use a brita when I'm @ uni, makes it taste a lot better.

The same problem in Bristol (even further south), crap water in comparison..So depending on where it's moved to that would explain it

Was brewed in Newcastle, now its brewed in Sunderland, thats why it tastes crap. Biggest mistake ever moving it across the water, I'm sure the maccums are doing it on purpose
