when I popped my knee - the physio put me on a prgram of excercise that involved using the cross-trainer and the recumbent bike at the gym - the cross trainer is good cos it works just like running, but you 'pedal' so your feet don't actually lift off the pads - and the recumbent bike is basicaly a sit down bike instead of a sit up bike - like a car seat, but you pedal - less stress on the feet and knees, but damn good for keeping the joints and stuff healthy
