    arg! cube annoyances!

Sitting here at the moment in my cube, and the guy 10 cubes away from my is having a conference call - ON LOUDSPEAKER. He's the only one in his cube, theres absolutely no need for him to be on loudspeaker as opposed to on his actual phone..it's driving me crazy.

I'm not that busy at the moment but its really, really annoying, anyone else work in cubes and shares my pain?

while i'm on the subject, what other cube annoyances do you have? Each one the same..so impersonal and noisey

Whoever thought up the idea of cubicles instead of offices should be shot. Repeatedly. In a painful place.

I have heard that George Michael often works in cubicals and is considered to be a pain in the backside.

Seriously though I work in a normal office with only 3 other people. The thought of working in a place all separated like that fills me with horror. They just look so clinical and boring.

The problem with call centres now is that many buildings within Town Centre's where these are usually built are now reaching astronomical prices when the space is sold off by the bean counters to up profit. What they are doing now is craming everyone onto say 1 floor instead of splitting them over 2 floors, and giving each person less footage space while selling off the other floor that was probably used to the highest bidder.

Issue's arising from this have been that people feel their own "space" is being violated - which hampers productivity and their general mood.

Other bad downsides that I have heard of is that you can smell the next person's breath in the cube next to you - NICE if they've had a garlic based dinner, or a kebab last night, and a friend recently told me that in a call center he went to work in for a small time he could actually smell the person's next to him sweaty feet humming from under the desk

Luckily, we do not have any of these issues here at SCAN as we have a fairly opened plan design, without any of the issues outlined above.

Not that I am defending the guy but there are other reasons why he might be doing it.

At my last place there was a lot of remote working between sites, and because of this there where often weekly, or even daily conference calls that went on for two hours or more. Most of the time you only had to listen, and say something if you had input, so people would put their phones on speaker and carry on with other work.

Perhaps you should speak to your college, tell him that he is disturbing you, and suggest that he requsitons a headset for his desk phone if he will be on lots of conference calls. That way he can take part without disturbing the rest of the office, and still keep his hands free.

my supervisor insists on having Clyde 2 on the radio REALLY LOUD so it's either really crap music or footy commentary ALL DAY. And sometimes, if we're REALLY lucky, he'll play stupid videos he's found on the internet on full volume, so you can hear it when you're in the kitchen. GRR!

all our teams in operations work within various cubicals so theres about 10/12 per area so can be noisy at peak times, luckily ive just secured myself a job in the quietest corner of the office (no1 works in the areas around us) so its bliss

Open plan here, it's good because I get on with most people, and I've successfully placed furniture to block off the view of people I don't like (so they can't see my area), and I can ignore them calling out to me until they get off their lazy asses to ask me something. I make a point of interupting them, telling them to wait and going over to them if they just start yelling out a question otherwise - it really bugs me, having a conversation over 3 desks...

Just make really loud farting noises outside his cubicle when he's doing that, you'll be surprised how quickly he pick the phone up!

Seriously though, I have engineered quite a few large scale projects requiring lengthy conference calls and in the office where I have my desk it sounds like feeding time at the zoo most of the time. Man am I glad there is a secrecy button on my phone!

Its open plan in my office, I don't think I could work in a place that used a cube system - plus I wouldn't be able to throw paper at anyone
