Good places to eat in York?

As above really...I'm currently studying at York Uni, but having worked a fair bit of late, I'm not really on the student budget...

I'll be taking a girl out for her birthday...can anyone suggest anywhere nice (can be reasonable cost up to the fairly ridiculous) to eat out in York, or surrounding (but easily accessible by public transport) area?

    Cheers guys

Meltons Too down Walmgate is nice, not insanely pricey. Across the road is the Argentinian steak place which is on our list of 'must try' places, comes highly recommended.

The Blue Bicycle also down Fossgate at the bridge has a good reputation mostly a fish menu but is rather expensive.

There's a nice Tapas place called La Tasca down Swinegate opposite the Slug & Lettuce, albeit a chain it's still very nice. Good atmosphere nice cosy place for a date and quite reasonably priced.

Around the corner is Bobo LoBo, a latin restaurant that's also quite cosy. Good food and good service.

The best I've been to though isn't really in York centre unfortunately, it's out on the A1079 to Scarborough. A place called Tykes at Sanburn Hall golf club, best steak I've had in years and the service is outstanding. Choose your own meat from the butchers display and watch as the chef cooks your meal to your specification.

To be honest there's loads it depends what you fancy really, we've tried most of them.

Agreed on Meltons Too, pretty walkable from the Uni too (unless you're lazy). Fiesta Mexicana do a great range on Mexican foods (not all insanely spicy) but it might not be the place if you're wanting a quiet meal as it tends to have quite a vibrant atmosphere. Other than that I really like El Piano on Grape Lane and I've heard lots of good things about Vanilla Black (also on Grape Lane), both are vegetarian type places.

The Blue Bicycle has a hella reputation and won lots of awards however I understand that the chef moved on and the quality just isn't the same.

Another in the "not really a place to eat out on a night, but still nice" place is Victor J's next to the Roman Bath - great Saturday lunchtime place to escape the hordes in town.

Totally love El Piano, though it's not really a very romantic place, she'll love it though as the choice is fanstastic (organic veggie tappas bar).

Agree about Victor J's - but it's more of a fancy lunctime sandwhich place - not even sure it's open in the evenings is it?

Cheaper evening meal options include ASK - the foods okie, but the setting of the old assembly hall is very nice.

If you're into beer then the Golden Fleece is very nice - very good food too, though obviously it's a pub not a restaurant.

If you have the money, the Dean Court Hotel is the finest place I've ever eaten in York - still quite nice to pop in for a coffee + dessert if you've had a meal elsewhere.

Well, there's a greasy spoon about five minutes away, but I don't think the chipped mug, formica plates and full english breakfast has quite the same 'wow' factor

I like ASK - foods ok, but the setting is really nice.

Same for Zizzis on Lendal, really nice looking place, food is nothing special.

Both come with fairly decent price tags attached though - they ain't gonna break the bank.

Bettys isn't worth the money imo, and its always full of tourists and people who think they are better than you. Not a fan of the place particularly, though they do rather tastey cakes!
