Well, if he uses capital letters, decent spelling and properly structured sentences he might be ok

EDIT: Seems i was a bit late with that one.

Anyway, in most cases, i would not put it on a CV. But If i was an employer (i am actually), i would not bin it because he had that on it, i would wait to meet him. In fact, i would probably get on well with him (although I'm not a WOW kind of guy). I'm guessing it had other things on it, no? If the only thing he did was WOW, then i might see things differently.

gaming as a 'hobby' fits into the same league as watching television, eating and sleeping. all of which are probaly other primary pursuits of the fat lazy geek

So disregarding the fact he was a "geek", did this really mean he wasn't up to the job? If he really has difficulty with customer-facing roles then so be it, but you shouldn't judge this solely on his hobbies.

I just think your whole attitude in this thread is somewhat pathetic, that's all.

i personally think that it demonstrates a lazy and apathetic attitude to life if you celebrate something that is essentially a waste of life. Which is fine. be apathetic, spend your life playing mmporg. but dont expect it to help you get employment.

i say this from personal experience... if i spend a day gaming, i dont at the end of it think 'what a fulfilling and interesting experience that was'

instead i think... what a ****ing waste

Maybe, but A) It's their choice at the end of the day and B) Many people I know of who play vast amounts of games can actually live a life outside of this, and interact with other human beings quite well

howard theres nothing wrong with being a geek, or being obsessed with mmporg... but the reality is that this sort of person more often than not fits the stereotype, because they have come to the point of thinking... what shall i put in my CV as a hobby, and because their life consists of little else, they put gaming. this person is bound to be lazy and demotivated, and isnt the sort of person you want working for you.

the person who gets out to the gym and likes to socialise lends themselves far more to a business environment. not because they conform to some social construction of what makes a good worker, but because they are more likely to be hard working and motivated than someone who spends their life literally sitting on a chair infront of a screen. although seen as this is what they will probaly do at work, you could say they are perfectly adapted!

I agree about the antisocial aspect, but I don't think all of them are "lazy". I'm not exactly the most outgoing of people, and didn't/don't exactly have a CV blossoming with varied activities, but it didn't stop me wanting a job. I may be lazy occasionally, but not that bad
Fortunately I found one (Junior IT Admin role) and it allows me to do what I've been doing as a "hobby" for the past God knows how many years whilst I probably didn't "get out" as much as some people. But I don't have any problems interacting with the staff at work

Yes, someone who spends their free time socialising and generally enjoying the outgoing lifestyle is more likely to succeed in a business environment perhaps, but this is down to life experience, and it doesn't mean the other people can't succeed in one way or another. A computer programming role, for instance. Many programmers earn a comfortable living

Harry1, is your cv written by yourself and in the same style that you use on these forums?

You have obviously played the wrong games...

I remember the first online based game i played, it was a turn based space civilization type of thing called Dark Galaxy not the best game around but the community made it great, still it was dam time consuming and I never played it again.

My Clan leader proved to be a responsible and efficient person, he was able to motivate and organize a great number of people from different countries with different time zones to work together as a team. I could explain more about the structure of the game but it’s enough for me to say that in a turn based game timing and organization is key.

Although it was a game he was still leading real people and he showed real skills needed to any position where you have people working with or under you.

Still I wouldn’t put that on my CV

Look at the four kings - putting "I play Counter Strike all day" would be the first thing they'd put on their CVs because they've got amazing team qualities. I don't think it's a bad thing, it's just that people in general think it's a bad thing probably due to some form of social conditioning.

this day an age gaming is still required as geeky there for u get the sterotype of lacking social skills, not going out much, and generally reading books on sci fi, like stargate of wawrhammer. It jsut HOW it is at the moment. Things will change eventually once gaming goes on TV regular magazine and things. But harry1 is right tbh, i would feel the same if someone put that as there hobby. Would jsut assume he rarely goes outside and might probably lack much interaction with people outside ventrillo/teamspeak. Just my opinion at the moment. Although i think alot of us on here arnt like that, we just show an interest gaming

A very sad but true fact is some folk just really don't know how to write CV's. I've seen some things you wouldn't believe, people waaaay underselling or overselling themselves. So I'd never judge a candidate purely on their CV. Therefore I'd never refuse someone a job interview because of their hobbies, or lack thereof.

However, I've read CV's where people list gaming as a hobby and that's fine, but I'd be a little concerned if it was someone's only hobby. It's not specifically gaming that bothers me, anyone who only had solo pursuits listed might concern me. Not saying I'd rule them out at all, it would just make me think I may need to treat/train them differently.

I'd be more put out if someone listed their virtual achievements and expected me to be impressed by it. Communicating and organising by text and headset in an environment you enjoy, spend a large amount of time in and feel comfortable in is fine but it doesn't mean you can communicate and organise anywhere near as well in a real-world situation. Maybe that's because the jobs I've hired for have never been like any computer games though

And if they listed gaming as a sporting interest that would just get my back up. It's been done before, and I've no doubt I'll now get people arguing with me. I know the arguements for and against but I'd still suggest you go for a job with XFX if you're looking for sympathy on that front
