    Gonna go to uni

So anyway, i filled out my UCAS form today and i only picked out one uni which was portsmouth because i didn't have enough money to get anywhere else and I was only in england for a weekend. I 'spose it's ok to choose one uni. I picked 5 courses from it.

Anyone fancy like filling me in on what uni REALLY is like 'cause it's going to cost me an absolute bomb to go to uni so it better be worth the education.

Don't you peeps get homesick and stuff?

Also is anyone else going to portsmouth uni at the mo'?

Gowan, you know you wanna reply

not sure how great pompey uni is, you could/should have looked at southhampton and the uni in guildford (university of surrey or something i think its called?), as both of them are quite good - i think southampton is 2nd in england for computer science

if your in portsmouth, try to avoid leigh park (pikey hell hole), and be wary of fratton, as its not a desirable place either , gun wharfs quite nice tho heh

well personally and i mean PERSONALLY i didn't like southampton, i only like the city center. I'm not used to all these big places, it's quite scary...

I was going to look into bournemouth but i'm not sure yet. I've got to decide tommorow what other uni i want to go to.

How "dodgy" is portsmouth? It seemed like a pretty nice place to me. I just want to be somewhere safe and close to home. I also like the quality of portsmouth, the city is nice, the general area is nice and it's by the sea which reminds me of home

It took me two weeks to do my personal statement

I just hope they will accept me. Apparently they accept overseas students because we pay a crap load to study at the uni.

I went to Surrey and knew a few people from Guernsey. Doesn't your government pay all your fees?

A lot of my friends went to Portsmouth. They all seemed to enjoy themselves though I can't really comment on the quality of the courses since my friends never seemed to attend lectures.

Going to university is expensive anywhere, but I guess Portsmouth would be one of the cheaper ones for you.

My advice is to choose the uni with the BEST reputation, that way you'll get a good return on your investment.

However if you go to a sh*tty uni, you'll most likely be wasting your money.

I know it seems harsh but that's the way it is.

    Erm...

well firstly UCAS forms have to reach ucas by the 15th iirc, so unless they sent it straight off it may not get processed

    also

applyin for 5 courses at 1 uni is suicide, unless there different courses and u done a decent personal statement to sort it out, however if there all in the same subject area thenthey will go to the same admin, and they will see there all the same and only offer you 1 course, the lowest entry requirement/or unpopular one

the idea is to apply to several so you get loads of offers and choose instead of 1 incase you do better, or worse and can get in different places.

they do this for their statistics, so they can say from so many applicees they only accepted a few, like, 2302 applied, howeer they only let 500 people on a course, they do it so that the course looks sought after, and makes people want to go for it, for example, if they let everyone 2302 in, then any one could get in, and theyd think its a lame uni.

you should be ok if u get decent grades, but applyin 2 diff unis is wiser

Well my UCAS form has been submitted now. It's gone, done and dusted. I chose 5 courses all in the same area yeh and i should be getting good grades yup. It was a decent personal statement i took my time on it. I couldn't choose multiple uni's 'cause i simply couldn't afford to travel everywhere.

My lecturer told me they prefer overseas students (moi) because we pay more. We will see though

    yeah they do prefer them.
Have you got the same system as us? You are means tested on your income and have to pay up to a maximun of £8,900 a year (but you will probably need more).
Sent my form in about a month ago.

Yup, according to the UK we are not part of it so it seems.

I don't know if we are "means" tested. Never heard of it tbh

Channel Islands are not part of the UK, but we are part of the British Ilses.
Also I dont think we are part of the EU either :S.
Means testing is where they look at how much money your family earn etc, and work out how much it would be fair for you to pay.
So if you parents dont earn much they will give you more money.
