PB G4 vs.MacBookPro: Care to Comment?

Hi,

As some of you know, I've gone the dark way for quite a while with Apple, but yesterday, a year later (almost), my 15" powerbook G4 1.67GHz (HD screen) completely died. It starts, plays the Apple chime and that's it.

I've given it to my Apple contact and he has had it for a day and is completely mystified, so it's likely that it'll get sent to Singapore or get a full mainboard replacement.

This delay could potentially take a looooong time, so I've been thinking about picking up a 2.33GHz c2d macbookpro, but after reading threads such as this I'm feeling a tad hesitant.

I'm going to see if they will open the box on purchase and let me inspect it in-store...and take it from there.

Any comments or thoughts? Should I go for the mbp or do you reckon I should just wait for Apple to repair the trusty G4 which tbh, gave NO problems even after being dropped on the side, denting a bit of the alu near the DVI port (which worked!)...

it is one of those quirks that every machine has my windows dell does this sometimes as well.

There will always be faulty laptops , just the internet makes a few bad ones look like thousands. Just pick up the mbp you won't be disappointed! I love mine.

if you do pick one up, just clarify the returns policy before you buy. get all the details, and if you get it in store, get the name of the guy who told you (like if 'Bob' says you can bring it back for a swap in 14 days and when you do, 'Joe' says its 7 days. usually asking their name when they make a guarantee suddenly makes them check the facts ) maybe I'm just a cynic, but I have been told one thing by one shop guy and a completely diff one by another many times...

from what I have heard, the c2d mbp's are a good buy

Well you should know the dangers of going for early revisions of apple computers/notebooks mike =)

I would guess this is just a problem with the first revision of the new MBPs..so if you give it a month or so then this bug will probably be gone.

Well, I actually convinced the store manager to open the unit and let me inspect it, being a longs standing customer. I pretty much had around 2-3 hrs play time with it, running it thru various tests.

Checked the screen for deadpixels (none), the latch, and mag connector for reboot issues. Sleep works fine, not hard rebooted and am quite pleased .







My contact at Apple has ordered a new mainboard (inc processors etc) for the pb and I should get it back by around the 28th.
