considering getting one of those oil-filled radiators, since the heating in this house is so appaling. it manages to run through £2/day and its only barely making the house a comfortable temperature, let alone hot! And its not even on all day

for £2/day i'd expect a sauna experience out of my central heating

Since Electric is billed by the kW/Hour, you can take that rate, x2 (if 2kW) and then times by the time it operates - gives you the price

oil filled are ok, for heating upto a certain level only really.

the modern gas multi-mode boiler is actually rather efficent, have you looked at bleeding your radiators, and ensuring the pressure is high enough? Otherwise you will be wasteding money needlessly in your radiators.

I must admit my central heating is quite efficient, I'm not sure on the bill, but its not massive. Have you had the boiler serviced recently? May help...

I'm renting a student place and the landlords a bit funny about...well, pretty much everything. its an old house and really crap in a lot of ways.

if it was my own place then i would just do whatever it takes to make the current system work better, but i can't really mess with anything

My stupid housemate has a 2kw electric heater in his room and keeps it on day and night. Must not have been off from Mid November until we broke up from on 15th December. I want to know how much that;s costing as I don't think it';s fair that I should pay such a high electricity bill for HIS electricity. He even leaves it on if he's out for 2 days or something, proper waste of electricity.

Easier said than done that is, I once tried to decide which supplier would be cheapest for us and trying to make sense of billing is the most complicated thing in the world....well maybe not but it's hard enough, there is not one rate per kWh but a variable marginal one depending on how much overall usage is. And then different tariffs like Economy 7, cheap overnight etc etc etc.....

Oiled filled rad's are only efficient if you operate them often. I.e keep them on.

They take alot to get them warm but once they are warm, they stey warm for much longer than boggo standard electric heaters.

If you have to run one or more electric heaters - i would suggest that you would probably save money in the long run getting proper combi boiler gas central heating installed.

Edit - btw if your measuring electric heaters, its not measured in killowatt hours, its measured in killowat/instantaniousseconds. I.e your 2kw heater on full blast will be using 2000watts this SECOND. Its kinda like keeping a kettle on........... :S

Aye, he does. Not sure on the regularity of it but it's up to him to maintain the boiler in a safe working order.

So, what you could do is find out how often the boiler should be serviced and when it was last serviced... Then either ask the landlord to get it serviced or ring the gas board and complain of headaches and lethargy (classic signs of carbon monoxide poisoning)

Varies. My bills had the following rates
12.9P per KWh for peak time
8.something P Per KWh for off peak
2.9P per Kwh for Economy 7/overnight.

Yeah, it's still bugger all in the context of leaving a TV on standby as opposed to turning it off

Heaters won't half rack up a bill though!
