its a longweight.
personaly favourate of mine when the difficult kids where been to difficult "go grab a longweight from the other end of the lab please"

looks like a Dial Test Indicator to me (DTI).
it can measure fractions of a millimeter. can measure small deflections. especially helpful for setting up cams on an engine.
We called them a "Dial Gauge" which is another name for DTI when I taught civil engineering experiments at Uni.
