    na it's a nanomicrometer even though it would need to fire electrons at the sample to tell the distance

    personaly favourate of mine when the difficult kids where been to difficult "go grab a longweight from the other end of the lab please"

    How about a left handed screwdriver or a glass hammer, maybes a sky hook or tartan paint. Back ontopic it's a Dial Test indicator as stated before, is a very usfaul bit of equipment.....wonder if I should offer to sell mine

    looks like a Dial Test Indicator to me (DTI).

    it can measure fractions of a millimeter. can measure small deflections. especially helpful for setting up cams on an engine.

    We called them a "Dial Gauge" which is another name for DTI when I taught civil engineering experiments at Uni.
