most of the most beautiful holiday destinations are fairly third-world - cuba, kenya, and so on
it's quite sad really - all that luxury in the resorts, and people starving outside

i left on the 23rd Dec, and the canadians decended for xmas.. got a little bit full on the resort then, and we were glad to be leaving.
Havana is a total and utter slum in most parts, of course you dont see that on the pics

Things may have changed a bit, but it I'm sure it won't have changed that much.
It was very quiet (I think some of the islands are more like Ibiza!) and relaxing, but there was entertainment in the bars in the evening. Gorgeous gorgeous place, amazing diving and snorkelling, some good trips to other islands, fishing etc etc. You could wander along the beach and not see a soul, despite the fact that it was a tiny island (and take pics like this!)
We were all inclusive, and there were a couple of restaurants to choose from, open late into the night so you could nip out for a midnight snack!
August was monsoon season, and it was still really hot, and we had a few REALLY heavy rainstorms, but they only lasted a few minutes, and then it was really hot again and everything dried out really quickly. Quite impressive to see really! Apparently, the "summer" months are much more busy and from what people have said would have been way too hot for me.
I would love to go back!
I've had a lot of sobering thoughts in my time.... It was them that started me drinking.
Dominican Republic is also lovely. Went a few years back to a hotel called Sea Breezes Punta Cana. All inclusive, including internationally branded drinks (very rare). Excellent food and facilities. I got two weeks including flights for £750 pp.
