Aha! You almost had me there, chap - but my witty persona has outwitted you! I'm not having any dinner tonight (going out for a binge, empty stomach is a LAW), I live in a bungalow, and I don't have a dog!

Hoho! Actually... I don't live in a bungalow. It just made me feel better that I proved 3 parts of your statement wrong, rather than too

On another note also while were ranting...

OK, I work for a firm who deals with carpet/flooring/sofa claims for insurance companies.

There are 15 people in my office (I am the only bloke...), now then it seems like everyday theres someone off sick. My week starts v busy on a Monday and generally gets quieter towards the end of the week, if someones off then whoever is there has to cover the work.

Without blowing my own trumpet, I haven't had a sick day off in 4 years (ive been at my current job for 15 months now), do I get recognition for this at all? No.... Theres no incentive for good attendence at all. I feel a right twonk if I even ask for an unpaid day off and feel that I need to justify why I want the day off to my Dept Manager.

It's the general thing about companies these days, all money and who cares about staff, as they can go to agencies and get more (which then take months to train and make mistakes the rest of the staff have to sort out).

I totally sympathise with you on this and im getting around to thinking about taking a few days 'off sick' myself

I've not been sick in my whole working life so far which includes 4 years at my current job and you're right, most places dont do owt for the reliable ones so I thought I'd see what I could do and suggested that ANYONE that is not sick for the entire holiday year (be that Jan - Dec or April - March) get an EXTRA 1-2 days annual leave.

I'll let you know how it goes

i work in retail unfortunatly but its just part time whlie im at college and im not too bothered about the crap pay of £4.1 (though £6.15 on sundays which is half of my hours).
my birthday was 2 weeks ago so when i got my pay today i expected pay rise (18 now) and i was shocked to find this will take 3 weeks for them to sort out.
last week they returned a query on a pay slip i gave them LAST YEAR! they said it got lost with some other paperwork. also i was apparently wrong not that im botherred about £20 i missed from a year agos wages...
i think ive took 3 days off sick in the year ive been there + a few days of short notice holiday (which was unpaid - they wouldnt let me have it payed, meaning id need extra hours to make it up, but unpaid they dont care). sometimes im often late to work aswell, today 30mins late, they didnt care. they know that im good at selling stuff and if im late its not at a busy time anyway, and they prefer to have me there than to have to hire more staff and train them...
im very annoyed though that they put me down for working boxing day - they wouldnt let me change it either. if i didnt want the extra money i woulndt turn up and not tell them either. those hours arnt on my contract therfore they have no reson to expect me to be working then, esp without asking first.

simply if they refuse to give you time off, tell them that you will leave, they have to make the desision as to whether you are worth keeping. if you are a good worker, and dont take lots of days off (when your not ill) they will always keep you + give you the day off. usually there are other staff that can take your place (and you should know if there is), if theres not though then threateneing to leave might not be the best thing to do unless you can find some one to cover your hours as they wont have anything they can do exept let you go. its easyer to get some one to do your hours if you ask them before you ask the manager if you can have the time off - it saves them the effort of finding someone.

can any one suggest any good paying jobs. i cba to do security work, retail gives me a headache due to the noise of stupid customers and officework is just boring rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbishe...

I had one of the best nights i've ever had, my mother was really crying cause she thought i couldnt be there because of work so when i turned up she started crying again!, but was so happy to see me.

I got to see a lot of family that i havent seen in years and talked to a lot of people, also i helped my sister prepare sandwiches for the party and it was tight for time i tell you! but what a great night

Silent Death, i used to in my last job before the current one be able to if i wanted put pressure on them if i felt i was being abused, as they considered me a very good worker and nearly irreplacable and could take a sicky and they couldnt say very much as the staff in the office were always off sick whereas i'd come in every day and not go on a sick, as i said before i was a mug

But the current job as Rabs has said, they can just get agency staff or employee a new person just like that, theres plenty more staff out there who can do my job, not as well though they put you in a position of fear where if you make one false move they will sack you so putting pressure on them wont work im afraid.

And to Rabs take some sick time off m8 you deserve it, probably cause your the only man in the office the woman have separated you into another group you know the reliable he wouldnt take a sicky like we do all the time group and if he does there will be hell to pay!.

Sadly that happens all the time in work im not just separating woman from men as this separation seems to happen everywhere..

I worked at B&Q years ago and would turn up on time every day, another bloke at work was always late and turned up for 3 weeks straight late, he drove a car in so had no excuse, i had to get the bus which was notoriously unreliable and 2 days of this same week where he turned up late my bus i turned up late, guess who got the bollocking about it??
