    BarclayCard Scam - Be Vigilant

    Hi All,

I was on the phone to DR last night when the landline rang and I had "BarclayCard" call me to confirm my contact details.
It was obviously an Indian call centre.

Now being the world-fearing sceptic that I am I told them I'm not confirming anything over the phone to anyone about my credit cards when I don't know who they are.

I called BarclayCard this morning to just confirm my account was ok, and it appears that a dodgy call centre rep. accessed my account last night for no reason, they do NOT call anyone to get contact details EVER.

So if you get the call... Don't give them anything - and ring BarclayCard afterwarsd to check your account it ok.

Just thought I would make everyone aware....

What explanation did they give you when you were on the phone to them this morning? That it was a single member of staff doing something they shouldn't?

Yeah, they were going to "investigate" the matter.

Does that happen? I mean, internal scams? i.e. company employees making phone calls to gain access to private details without using the computer systems? All bank calls are monitored nowadays anyway aren't they?

But indeed the scams get worse and worse, it makes you wonder why people do things like this (morally I mean).

Well in my opinion, this will only become more common as more and more financial call centres are moved out of this country. They can sell the "customers" details for vastly more than they earn doing the call centre job.

As many may know i used to work for barclaycard on outbound calls, and so naturally i had the finger of suspicion pointed at me by customers a few times.

Details to ask for when called:

    • last 4 card numbers (first 4 are uniform to card type)
    • verification password given at sign up (usually your mothers maiden name)
    • recent transactions

do be aware that barclaycard now operate a policy of asking for your YEAR of birth when they call (due to dpa changes), it is not necessary to confirm your whole date of birth.
