DVI problem

I have a Leadtek 8600gs with 2 dual link dvi-i ports. I have a cibox 2201d 22" monitor that has a dvi-i single port on it.
At the moment i have a vga cable going into a dual link dvi-i adapter into my g-card and a then into the vga port on my monitor.

I did some looking and found that a single dvi-i cable would work in the dual port and the dvi-i in the monitor.

Not a good idea. It works in most things as desktop, explorer etc, but the moment i go to start up BF2142 nothing happens. Same with other games. The moment i put the dual link to vga back in everything works.

The question is, despite websites saying i can mix the two, are they wrong? Do i need an adapter for the monitor? Unfortunatley being impatient i rushed off to PC World and forked out £30 for a damn cable!!!
