Question Can anyone recommend an X1900 XT Crossfire replacement?

I've had this card for a while and want to replace it.

I'd love something quieter, single slot (if possible) and quicker (if possible)

Not been in the gfx card business for a while so I'm lost as to what I could replace it with?

    Cheers in advance!

    Paul.

Re: Can anyone recommend an X1900 XT Crossfire replacement?

    Depends on your budget.

    £170ish will get you a 8800GT 512Mb (best performance)
    £140ish will get you a HD3870 512Mb (85% performance of the 8800GT 512Mb)
£115ish will get you a 8800GT 256Mb (dependant on settings, roughly in the same league as the ones above, but you'd have to live with 1280x1024, low or No AA or Lower texture settings, or mix of all above)

the HD3850 is better than your X1900XT, but not by anything much, so it's not worth considering. I have just moved from a X1950XT 256Mb to a 8800GT 512mb and I don't regret it. Nice boost to performance but the stock fan is a little whiny (similar noise level to the X1950XT when in games). You might want to look at Sparkle's Passive 8800GT, or buy an Accelero S1 (about £17 and turbo module £6..available at scan) to keep the noise down, assuming you buy a 8800GT.

Re: Can anyone recommend an X1900 XT Crossfire replacement?

What about a pair of HD3850 cards in crossfire or even the HD3870??

The HD3850 and the HD3870 cards are dropping price and you can get a 256MB HD3850 for under 105 quid and a HD3870 for under 140 quid too!!

Ebuyer have the 512MB version of the HD3850 for 115 quid!! I just paid 147 quid for a HD3870 last week and now the prices have already dropped by as much as 10 quid!! Considering that the HD3850 is a lower clocked HD3870 with DDR3 memory I would have bought the 512MB HD3850 and saved myself 30 quid if they were available last week!! The HD3850 and HD3870 overclock well too!! At least I got a weekend of playing Crysis out of it!!

Not a fan of passive cooled if thats what it is, I prefer aftermarket cooling just put an arctic cooling s1 one mine, then bought the turbo fans, only came to 20 quid, dont think it cuts it for the new cards though,

Gives me silent operation and an idle of 35 load of 40.

Only thing i hear in my PC is the hard drives

Re: Can anyone recommend an X1900 XT Crossfire replacement?

Cheers folks! I might save a few pennies and see if I can get an 8800GT....I saw the review of that silent one which sounds very nice if I can ever find it!

Then it's a new mobo because my Asus P5W Deluxe is a pile of poo; neither LAN card will stay in Gigabit mode, overclocking results in the PCIe x16 dropping down to x1 etc. From now on I'm not buying a just released mobo

Is your X1900XT a crossfire master card?

Yes it is I intended getting another card but I just don't play games often enough for that amount of noise in my system.

Are you selling the X1900XT? If so, how much? I may be looking to buy one soon (though would prefer a 1950XT Crossfire master, they appear to be rare as hen's teeth round these here parts)...

Re: Can anyone recommend an X1900 XT Crossfire replacement?

I would be at some point. Not sure when though as I need other stuff non-PC related first.

I actually thought there was something wrong with it as I had the 7.7 drivers and my second monitor repeatedly kept blanking out, plus power saving stopped working. Upgraded to the 7.11s and all seems to be fine so I guess the drivers did something to my setup.

what's the point of buying an ATI card? the 8800GT or new 8800GTS perform better in virtually everything. the 8800GT is best bang for buck i've seen in....well, forever

Yes, "virtually", perhaps, but not always, in terms of hardware power the 3870 is superior in every respect, the only difference is the large number of games that contain nVidia only specific enhancement code, as well as nVidia's drivers hugely bloated with app specific code. Not to meantion AMD's drivers aren't as bloody horrid, and their media support doesn't suck ass. And the 3870 is cheaper.

So when you ask what's the point in buying an 'ATi' card?.. because they're not that bad, at all.

well sure, they aren't bad, they are very decent actually. but when you factor in price, then the 8800 series is just far more attractive in every way, hence why they are so popular this christmas
