    Question 8800 GT's - Temperature/fan control

Seriously do these cards even have ANY kind of temperature/fan control?

I've used Riva Tuner to keep the card below 70 degrees, without Riva tuner the card seems to just SIT with its 'quiet' fan mode and just let the GPU burn all the way upto 83 degrees! What gives?

I presume they were designed for the noise concious gamer. Personally I couldn't give a toss I'd rathe have the hardware keep itself cool rather than have yet another process in Windows polling to keep the temperature down.

A friend has the Asus version of the card, I have the PNY and similar results are found though his is a little cooler (peaking at 80 degrees).

    Any thoughts or advice?

83 Degrees is alright for the card, they're designed to run >100'C without damage.
GPU are made like this, not much you can do about it.

you need to update the cards BIOS, there is a bug where the fan just sits at 29%

    Re: 8800 GT's - Temperature/fan control

Its strange, but my 8800GT Superclocked idles at around 40c with the fan running 100%, and the most I've seen it hit under load is 68c. Then again, my case runs rather cold anyways (my overclcoked Core 2 Duo idles between 19-25c, and underl oad didn't ever break 40c).

I stress this to all 8800GT users...*Get good case cooling!* It isn't just the cooling on the card that makes a difference. My rig has an intake fan on the side that blows directly on the video card, and another fan a few inches above it that draws the hot air out (in conjunction with the rear outtake fan). It works rather well. Itd a little noisy, but its not an inconvenience. And seriously, the difference between an 8800 GT's fan running at 30% and 100%, while noticable, isn't that major (and if you want proper cooling, you should have your case fans running 100% anyways, and should have at least 4, in my opinion.

    Re: 8800 GT's - Temperature/fan control

I have an Inno3d 8800GT 512 which does something similar; using Nibitor to get the bios the settings say it starts the fan at 29% and then won't even consider changing it until it hits 88 degrees C!! I know GPUs can run hot, but it's none too clever; especially since the heat can rise very sharply while under load...
I also use RivaTuner with several fan profile launchers which cool it aggresively but then it gets noisy; I'm considering flashing it to start the fan at 40% and overclock it a bit; and I'm thinking of changing the stock cooler for the arctic cooler accelero s1 + a fan; but they're out of stock everywhere! Is it because the 8800GT is so hot that the accelero s1 is sold out??
any-hoo, let us know how you get on...
    Bob
