    GT is best

    GTS and 9600GT fairly similar.

I'd go for the 9600GT I think. Cool and apparently quiet.

    Re: 9600GTor 8800GT or 8800GTS 640mb or 800GS

Is it perhaps so you can still play games on her PC?

    I would get

    AMD 3600 X2 ~£30 + Cheep quiet cooler ~£10
    Antec NSK 3480 + 380W earthwatts ~£60
    Asus 780G motherboard ~£55
    2GB PC6400 ~£30
Western Digital HDD + optical ~£50

and then spend the change on something your mum would actually like

That would be damn near silent and play games at low resolutions due to having exceptional Integrated grpahics.

The whole "i am a gamer, dad has 8800gts" bit was....well, no offence, but irrelevant, you could have simply said you need to build a PC for ur mum with a 300 budget, no one would have looked down upon you if u said that * sorry, no offence, but do try that sometimes, makes u feel good *

Hunain is fully corect there, no indication of what this pc is for other than it for his mum.
She might be a hardcore gamer for all we know or just want to type up the odd letter.

With out knowing what this pc is going to be used for there's no form of usefull advise we can give.

Actually all the reviews have shown that the 8800GS 384mb plays Crysis better than a 9600GT.

Anyway you can now get an EVGA 8800GS for £83 to £86:

    Komplett.co.uk - EVGA GeForce 8800GS 384MB GDDR3, HDCP, PCI-Express 2.0, 2xDVI-I, 192bit

Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK

    The Powercolor HD3850 512mb costs £88:

but doesn't the 9600 play most other games better? unless he's looking for the utmost high crysis performance I wouldn't get it.

    Re: 9600GTor 8800GT or 8800GTS 640mb or 800GS

The 8800GS is being rebranded to the 9600GSO.

According to Tweaktown review it is faster than the 9600GT with AA on and slower with it off:

    ASUS GeForce 8800GS TOP 384MB :: TweakTown

Also looking at Expreview and CustomPC it still acheives good framerates too:

    G80 VS G92: Med to high end GeForce GFX cards round-up! - Expreview.com (9)

XFX GeForce 8800 GS Alpha Dog XXX | Graphics cards | Reviews | Custom PC

Considering it costs £86 as opposed to at least £100 for the 9600GT still measn it is excellent value for money.Even the HD3850 512mb is good value for £88.
