With overclocking of a graphics cards you use RivaTuner (as i understand), but is it easy to achieve the sorts of overclocks that the manufacturers make??

the oc versions of cards are usually as high as that card can go sometimes they are higher but have even more powerful fans to make up for it. So just go up bit by bit until artifacts show then go down to last working setting and thats your max but please stress test with every increment as you dont wanna think you got the highest setting start a game then artifacts appear like crazy.
with ATI cards they have something called overdrive which stress tests your card in small clock increments.
i find it's usually easy to get the manufacturer overclocks...
i mean, i get the feelin i could have hit 900+ core on my sexy Gecube '70 without a volt mod... and it was OCed out of the box
What are artefacts?
Distortions in the image, tearing, discolouration, the kind of damaged parts where the GPU screwed up in some math and messed up the image, sometimes a few frames can be completely corrupted. It's the same thing as when you overclock your CPU too much, and you get a BSoD, only the GPU isn't as important and can be reinitialized by the GPU drivers.
I'm hoping to overclock my card when i get it, its 8800GT.
Whats the max they go upto then?
I see some factory oc at 650mhz etc
