Talking GTX 260 and 280 Price Cuts!! (according to ZDNet)

It looks like the GTX 260 and the 280 (yay!) will be getting some significant price cuts soon, according to ZDNet. The article can be found at: http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=2225.

About four weeks after the release of the GeForce GTX 200 series, NVIDIA has slashed the price of the GTX 260 and 280 GPUs in response to competition from AMD/ATI.

Here are the details for the price cuts:

    GTX 260 - Now: $299/Was: $399
    GTX 280 - Now: $499/Was: $649
No need to remind you that NVIDIA is under pressure from problems that have emerged relating to as yet unknown models of older mobile GPUs, and the company’s stock price has collapsed in recent days. That said, things aren’t all that rosy over in the AMD/ATI camp either.

Hey, but who cares, all these price cuts are good for the consumer!
We'll see if there's any truth to this soon enough, but it sounds good to me!

This happened last week didn't it?

The 260 is £200 and the 280 is about £300, especially leadtek models

Heh, it might have, but this is the first I've heard of it. It was good news for me, I want to try to get a GTX 280 around Christmas or so (I'm liking the eVGA GTX 280 FTW version ). Maybe they'll be even more price cuts before then.

Re: GTX 260 and 280 Price Cuts!! (according to ZDNet)

I think this is a second round of price cuts. The GT280 was about £450 when if first came out, then it moved to about £350, and I'm guessing it will come down to about £270 in the UK now, with the GT260 being about £100 cheaper still. Good prices indeed, if it happens. I'll be sorely tempted by one of these.

I think it'll keep going down as much as required to maintain competition, whether that's from AMD cards or from 55nm revisions.

Nvidia are trying to claw their way back to be on par with ATI. ATI have done a good job and bringing nvidia back to reality price wise ^^

eVGA may cost a little more, but their support and warranty is top notch, as is the quality of their cards. I won't buy a non-eVGA GeForce ever again, I figure; I've been that impressed since I got my 8800GT Superclocked from them.

Wished BFG and EVGA built ATI cards. I for one would love the better support and would be prepared to pay for it. Only downside to ATI cards.

That would be nice. I've never been real impressed with ATI (it seems nVidia generally makes better cards, even if they are pricey). In fact, the HD4870 is the first ATI card I've seriously considered (and a possibly-coming HD4870x2 card would be even more enticing). But seeing as I'm unfamiliar with the brands that put out ATI cards, and being extremely happy with eVGA so far, that alone puts a lot of weight in sticking with nVidia's offerings.

And if eVGA puts out a GTX 280x2 card, and it doesn't cost a fortune, I'll consider that a lock and buy it ASAP. Until then, I'm seriously considering an eVGA GTX 280 FTW Edition card when I save up the needed funds (no real rush, my superclocked 8800GT still runs fine).

I was in the same boat and tbh still might end up buying a 280 to see what its like. So far this year I'm on my 6th graphics card

You can't beat EVGA/BFG support and the warm fuzzy feeling they give you.

Sapphire is the premiere supplier of ATi cards, their bundles are great and so far I haven't had to use the tech support! Don't really know about other ATi suppliers though, isn't Gainward jumping on the ATi boat?

Does anyone know if a 280GX2 is coming out? Didn't Hexus say such a card wasn't possible because of heat, power, etc... :S

Yeah, I reckon a die-shrink would be necessary first. Or some kind of really exotic looking triple-width card. Still don't know how you'd get enough juice to it though.

Funny enough, neither have I, I have a 6 year old Sapphire card still ticking over just fine despite the beating I've given it. And a x1950 pro still going fine. Which is always a good sign.
