    Graphics card upgrade quandary

Ok, so it seems that the AMD HD4870 is the way to go for my next graphics card, but I'm wondering if it might be worth holding off for the release of the x2? I'm gaming at 1680*1050, but with a second monitor at 1440*900 for websurfing and all that jazz.

Currently running an 8800GTS 640Mb, so I can hold out for another month or so (rumour has it that the x2 is launching mid-late August if what I've read is to be believed) but I have oey burning a hole in my pocket now

I don't think it'd be worth going to an X2 in your situation.

The p5b does crossfire anyway doesn't it? So you can always add another 4870 should you ever come accross a situation that did need more power.

Bare in mind the P965 chipset can only run crossfire in a x16/x4 configuration rather than the more desirable x16/x16 (e.g. x38) which may result in some performance loss.

You could consider two card non-crossfire, if you just game on one monitor hook that up to the 4870 and then get a lowcost cheap card to run the smaller, fine for websurfing and such and leaves the 4870 free to put al it's grunt into the games.

Yep, the board is the next upgrade once I can set funds aside for a new board, CPU and Vista license.
