    Graphics Card Upgrade Advice

    Hi guys,

I am considering upgrading my graphics card. however, I don't know what to get.

I currently have a XFX Geforce 7950GT XT. I would like to get an 8800, but I don't know if it is worth forking out £400 for a GTX. Or should I just get a GTS and get another one later down the line and run in SLI.

Would I notice alot of difference upgrading from my 7950 to a GTS, or should I just spend the extra couple of hundred pound and get a GTX.

I also hear there are new versions of the 8800 - will this mean the exisiting ones will go down in price.

    any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Mark

you are likely roughly to see around a 1000-1400 point increase on 3dmark 06 changing from a 7950 GT to a 8800 GTS but alot is system dependant also

    a very rough guide here..

With the rig you have atm you would see a DEFINITE performance increase.

I just changed from a 7800GT to 8800GTS and the difference and fluidity in games is immense.

Would you recommend getting it? How much memory - 320mb or 640(or whatever it is).

I want to be able to play crysis and alan wake when they come out. Would this be possible with a gts?

    Depends on the monitor.
If 22" or more then 640mb version
If less the 320mb is as good and even in some benches is better than the 640mb version.

(I use the eVGA 8800GTS Superclocked 320mb with a 19" Widescreen @~ 1440x900. The pictures are amazing and everything in all games in maxxed out and runs flawlessly).

I am running a Dell 2407 WFP - which is 24". So I would probably be better with a 640mb or a gtx?

Don't upgrade now for a game that comes out later. By the time Crysis is out there will be something better than what is out now and you will be kicking yourself for not waiting.
If however you aren't happy with game performance now then go ahead. Well atleast wait 2 months or so because then the new ati cards and nvidia refresh should be out.

Excellent - that would save me putting it on ebay. How much would you offer - I am still not 100% sure what I am going to do.

I would wait a month or so....see what happens when R600 is available.

nVidia will be bringing out thier 8800 ultras as soon as R600 hits shelfs.

Could see some price drops on the GTS and GTX versions if were lucky.

    Take a looky here:

Great - cheers for the link. Very helpful.

I will see what happens in a month or so then see what I can afford. I wouldn't be getting one for a month or two anyway.

Ummm, isn't the Inquirier the tabloid of technology websites? Often as reliable as say The Sun or sometimes the Daily Star
