    Please explain Refresh rate

    Hey

    What refresh rate should I be using and what difference does it make?

    My monitor is a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 930SB.

    Thanks

    m0.

    Refresh rates are measured in herz (hz.) The one you're likely to hear about is the vertical refresh rate. This is how many times a second the image on the screen is updated.

    For example, my monitor is running at 85hz - the screen "refreshes" at "rate" of 85 times a second.

    85hz is OK for a monitor - I find that any lower than that and my eyes get tired quickly. My monitor will go higher (up to 150) but I get display distortion for some reason.

    If you have an LCD monitor then refresh rates tend to be lower, as they work on a different technology.

    Did that help?
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    The lower the rate the more flickery it is, you want it above 75 if you can. The higher the rate the less sharp the image becomes (generally speaking)

    your eyes & brain will start to notice your screen refreshing at lower rates, causing strain on them as you sub-consciously notice the refreshing for crt anything 70 + is best

    imagine it like a flick book, the faster the book flicks the animation looks smooth, if it flicks slowly you notice the individual frames.

    I got the full on explanation in an advanced hardware course. I would explain it, but i really cba. Basically if you've got it on 60Hz on a CRT then you're likely to give yourself a headache.

    Also it's measured in Hertz (Hz)

    Just being pedantic now

    a CRT works by tracing a single dot across a display, from top-left to bottom-right. the refresh rate signals how many times it draws the entire screen, per second.

    a low refresh rate can cause headaches, as it is just percievable as flickering - your eye is refreshing too close to the rate at which the screen is refreshing, so you can see half-drawn frames etc, at least on a subconcious level.

    tfts work differently, the entire screen is refreshed at the same time, and it merges from one pixel to another rather than starting from scratch every refresh - hence refresh rates are irrlevenat on tft, and headaches cannot be caused by low refreshes on them.

    Hey, even though there's now 4 explanations - at least they're along the same lines!
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    My monitor can do 60Hz,70Hz,75Hz,85Hz,90Hz and 100Hz.

    What do you think i should run at?

    Thanks again

    m0.

    EDIT: Why does the image on the screen move out of center when im changing refresh rate? I know I can adjust it back but why does it need to move?

    85Hz should be OK. You could try 90Hz.

    Unless your eyes are really shot, you'll notice it flickering anyway, if it's too low. Try looking at your Monitor from different angles, you'll notice it flickering at some angles if it's not right.

    yea I learned about that in Biology, its something to do with ur colour nodes and light and dark detection located in your eyes. I'd go on but qoute:

    85 is more than enough, anything below that - bad!

    I have mine at 75, i left it at 60 for an hour and it began to annoy the sh*t out of me, constant flickering, especially when playing quake 3
