hi all,
i am starting building my new machine, as I have just received the final bits yesterday.
I bought this HD4850; however they delivered me yesterday this HD4850
What do you guys think about these 2 different models? I really want something quiet and I am a bit concerned about this single slot graphics card.

Yes but if you look here http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/S...D_4850/25.html on that same review that card is very loud.
Looks like they just have the fan running very fast to keep the temps down.
Look at that cooler, it looks like they've taken one of the short intel stock coolers and stuck it on the card.
And howmany of us have kept the intel stock cooler?
If it was me I'd stick with that one, see what it's like and at least it's the reference card so fitting an aftermarket cooler shouldn't be a problem.

Not sure what you point is... do you realise GPUs don't need big ass coolers on like CPUs do... I dunno what would be cooler if you compare them at the same sound levels
Well my point is that gpu's are starting to catch cpu's up in terms of heat generated when manufactors are starting to put cpu coolers on them.
Must admit there are very few 4850 coolers that I like, they seem to ether be loud and cool or quiet and hot.
It's part of the reason I went for the 9800gtx
If I had gone for a 4850, I'd of got one with a stock cooler and bought an Akasa vortexx Neo to go on it.
The card you got should be fine but will run warmer than the one you ordered I am fairly sure
The single slot cooler is a poor performer (I replaced mine with an Accelero S1) due to 90*C load temps. But the single slot is a reference model, which I personally prefer - the VRMs are in a totally different place on the non-reference. Although this isn't a disadvantage, I just prefer the reference board layout. The dual slot will cool better though.
Also if colour matter to you you may want to get it replaced.
I'd return it and get the product you wanted. Just bought this card from Scan @ £129 so u got a good price.

The basis for making this card has got to be the cooling woes that the reference design cards are known for. With reference cards routinely hitting 90+ Celsius under load in an enclosed, well-ventilated chassis, there is a certain comfort factor that just is not there with the reference design cards. There are several things you can do to cool the card down (aftermarket utilities Riva Tuner and ATI tool) as well as the XML hack where you manually create a profile and modify the fan speeds that will allow you raise the fan speed to improve the cooling. This comes at a price though - increased fan noise. When pushed above 60% the fan gets a bit loud and while it helps cool the GPU and card, it can get annoying and reminds me of the noise level of the X1900XT cards from ATI. The cooling solution on this card remedies this problem and Sapphire was wise to incorporate a solution to the heat problem and do it with a near silent (from outside the case) solution. When the fan speed was ramped up to 100%, it was almost inaudible and provided load temperatures in the 60 degree celsius range. With the fan on auto, I could not hear the fan on the card running from outside the case and kept load temperatures in the low to mid 60 Celsius range. If the HD4850 is in your purchase plans, the Sapphire HD4850 Dual Slot Fansink video card should be on your shopping list. It's quiet, it effectively handles the heat, overclocks and can be had on the inexpensive side of the price scale.
It will depend on the enviroment, case type, number of other fans running etc. I can gurantee that the single slot cooler is noisy. I have built 5 systems with them and each case had to warn the customer about the noise.
I cant tell for sure as the card is for my sons Xmas pressie but it appears to be quieter from the reviews I have read.

The noise from the single slot cooler is over rated. It isnt loud but it is hot, mine gets to around 75 - 79 underload. And the only time it will be underload is when your gaming, and when you game you tend to be wearing a headset or have speakers turned up fairly loud, so any noise from the cooler will be inaudiable.
Your right, the main noise from the single slot is from bootup. However to my ears it is still noisy compared with others, again I would say it depends on the enviroment. Some of the 5 I built the PC's were used in living rooms, in those instances it did annoy others in the room.

I think I will stick with this one for the sake of hassle. It is not too noise, but gets really hot. I am not a hardcore gamer anyway and considering I am dealing with Pixmania, it would probably take another week. Regret not to have spent a few more quids and ordered from Scan.
The single slot cooler runs EXTREMELY hot, in gaming my temperatures are always at 100c - 115c, even at 40% (which is just about audible) and a side cooler for the card!.
If you were sent the wreong product, then get it exchanged.
100 - 115 degrees?! =S mine never goes over 80 and fan at around 25%
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaat :O!? I idle at about 60 - 70, but, trust me, after some time of cod4 or l4d it hits that.
Mine is at 80C usually (folding) never above 90C
