    GTX260 Crashes Computer

Well I'm just posting to see if anyone has had any experience of their system crashing when a GTX260 has been fitted. It arried today and I fitted it. Everything seemed fine until I ran the Vista score test and it started making whining noises. I checked on Google and found that this was quite normal for these cards. SO I left it and started playing Crysis which ran really well. Problem is that after an hour(ish) the whole system crashed just leaving my fans running.

I figured it was maybe just crysis being evil and tried Company of Heroes and after about 30 mins the same thing happened again.

Anyone out there have any ideas about this? My system specs are registered here so have a look.

    Thanks!

    Re: GTX260 Crashes Computer

I didn't have a card before this. I was using the onboard HD3200 gfx so no that sucked quite a lot though company of heroes was ok.

Could it be my PSU? Its 550w but on the box it says that is the minimum for this card. Dammit.

Unfortunately that doesn't tell us how many Amps your PSU can provide on the 12v rails.. there should be a table on the side of the PSU that gives the full details.

It could be PSU, temperature/GPU, or drivers.

    Re: GTX260 Crashes Computer

Sounds like a PSU problem? Have a look on the side of the PSU and see what details can be gleaned about 12v Amps?
    Hope you get it sorted.

Sorry I'm trying to understand the table but this is the PSU on Scan http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/550W-...ency-Black-Psu

    Yel/Bla: +12v :1-13A

    Does that make sense?

Mine is the XFX XT version the same as yours Roorooroo. Does yours make any noise when playing games?

    Does that make sense?
Yes, it means one 12v rail is rated to 14A, and the other is rated to 13A. This is not good, and I'd say, very likely to be the problem.

The minimum requirement for the GTX 260 is something like 36A between both rails.

    Re: GTX260 Crashes Computer

So, basically I'm short of what it needs then because it needs 36A, right? Damn, well can anyone recommend a good PSU for a decent price? I don't really have much to spend. Below £50 would be good.

This could also be a cooling problem.
I had a 280GTX that would run for about 30-40 mins before it started to overheat and shut itself down. RMAed the card and the new one worked without any further problems.
Use ATITool 's to run a stress test and then check your temperatures.

Is the stress test called find max core or find max mem? Also its reporting that my fan speed is 0%.

    Run 'scan for artifacts'
The fan should be at 40% to start with and climbing until it reaches 100% when fully loaded

It's running at 71C and the fan is still at 0%. I can't hear it spinning up either. Does the test finish before my CPU cooks?

Can you see if the fan is spinning? I wouldn't run any more testing or high load apps until you can verify if the fan is actually spinning.

Yeah i've just checked and it is spinning - just not any faster than when its idle. I stopped the test at 75C. Surely that's too hot for this thing to be running?
