Is it better to play games in OpenGL or DirectX?
I have a GF4 Ti 4200 128 MB DDR 8x AGP with directx 9a installed (soon to be 9b)
Which looks better? Which is smoother?
Gimme a clue!

Direct X with more recent games.
All of the latest games released are direct x only. The last one i can remember that was open gl was halflife but i could be wrong. Open Gl 2.0 development is VERY slow currently (the impression ive got) so the currently level is 1.4 which ~about direct x 8.0 standards, whereas directx 9 is open gl 2 standards.
Id hazard a guess that most drivers now are designed more in the line of direct X.
I dont like sig pics so i turn off sigs Which doesnt help when i dont know what ive written here! DOH!
IL-2 FB supports both openGL and Direct X
I also agree that DirectX tends to be faster, esp in more modern games and gfx cards. ATI cards particularly work slower in OpenGL than they would/do in DX so definitely go DX where ever possible there.

"What's OpenGl?"

Really?? I always got the impression that Carmack wouldn't do anything that's not on an open standard hence all his previous games have been using OpenGL...Originally posted by Bindibadgi

Yea, well quake 3 is open gl 1.4 and his previous versions of stuff have been either opengl/glide iirc (if not "software").Originally posted by spikegifted

Problem is - open gl is sooooo far behind now, i dont blame him for his attitude at all. That's a true quote from an interview about Doom 3 - asked whether he'd have opengl support in the engine. Spose that's another reason why this engine has taken so long - gotta relearn a lot of stuff that's direct x.

OpenGL has suffered because of the comittee infighting over the years, mainly M$ beggering about and making it's own implementation blah blah blah.
OpenGL 2.0 looks interesting though

Carmac is on the comittee
well, he's not a voting member, looking at the notes, nobody from ID has been to an opengl meeting in a very long time..

Yea it does look interesting but open gl is going the way of unix, SCO and linuxOriginally posted by Stoo

Multiple APIs are not only good they are necessery IMO, because without them we end up with a microsoft controlled gaming experience at the end of the day.

My thoughts exactly Bindi, without healthy competition it all gets rather stagnent
