Want to custom air cool my 4870x2 any ideas ?

This thread makes me chuckle, but it has given me a great idea. We should replace all those AC units in server rooms and install custom heatsinks and fans instead!

On a more serious note, there is no point in changing a stock graphics card cooler unless it's too noisy or doesn't have offer enough cooling potential for overclocking. I can't stress enough to the inexperienced what a bad idea it is, although it's occasionally worth the risk for silence or overclocking.

Graphics cards in my experience and from what I've read are very easy to break, more of a problem especially after the warranty has been voided.

My soloution for those who can't afford AC is this:

With regards th GPU killing I did fit a zalman to my nice X1800 a while back and that died after about 9 months
Just about to w/c my new 285 so hopefully that won't die too!!!

My Thermalright HR-03 fitted X1900XT is still going strong - the card is 3 years old, the cooler was fitted over 2 years ago.

I'm with you, I will never break a graphics card apart; I don't mind the noise since I crank up the volume when playing.

First batch sold out already. I was privileged enough to see one for myself at the quietpc stand at Multiplay i37, but not installed on a card as they didn't have a 4870X2 there (though they did have an installed near-identical GTX280 version). Until I see a review confirming the new screwset eliminates the installation problem though, I'm not going near one, especially since 4870X2s are now confined to the history books.

I believe they are shipping them with a new longer screw set, however if you were unfortunate to have the short screws you can order them off this website for free:

Mm so I've said, but as I say, if you could still get 4870X2 RMA replacements I'd do it, but since they don't make them any more I'm not leaving that to chance.
