    Re: HD 4890 or GTX295

For now I don't give a damn about DX11, it's just the performance I'm after. The single PCB GTX295s aren't referenced are they? So the noise depends on who you buy the card from..

Again, depends which single PCB (Noise is also subjective, some people think Antec 900s are quiet! LOL!)

The single PCB ones are reference as it enables Nvidia to reduce production costs on the card.

TBH,I would wait and see what ATI have out in the next few weeks.

Here are some details about the RV870 although they could be false:

The off-card ChipHell heatsink looks good,
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

    Re: HD 4890 or GTX295

Having just investigated through the community here on Hexus which is better: a system quad pumped with 4890s or a pair of 295GTX cards in SLI; a conclusion was eventually reached.

The 4870X2 cards have been discontinued apparently. If you can afford it, get a pair of 275GTX cards (costs about the same as a 295GTX but offers better performance), otherwise always go for the Radeon 4890, be it as a standalone or in x-fire, just because it is such good value.

    Hope this helps.

    Re: HD 4890 or GTX295

I'd go for two 4890s over two 275s, it's much cheaper.

An excellent point, the graphics card is still the loudest thing in my case, or is that the case fans? Meh.

My point is compared to the a 4890, the Single PCB is just as quiet. The Duel PCB ones were VERY noisy however, and the worst thing about a dual PCB one is that getting an after market cooler for them was next to impossible.

    Re: HD 4890 or GTX295

Different story with the 4890s, the fans are over-rated to stop people moaning about the high temps (even though the 4870's temps were no different to the GTX200 series'). Turn the fan down a bit and you can still have a quiet 4890 with the stock cooler.

My 4870X2 is pretty loud at full load but when thats the case I am normally gaming so the sound is on. However nowadays my pc is practically silent, which is partly due to me having the electric fan on (its hot today!)

    Re: HD 4890 or GTX295

    A 4870X2 is much louder than a 4890 because they use the same fan and the X2 runs it at a higher speed (4870 c. 1800rpm, 4890 c. 2400rpm, 4870X2 c. 3400rpm - run two of them and it's 4000+!)

There didn't seem to be too much in it. The single is still pretty noisy compared to a GTX 260.

Obviously depends on the game and how much load is placed on the card.

With ATI's new beast released next month it probbaly better to wait. Prices look like they could be around the 220-250 mark for possibly double the power of a 4890. If so it will turn the GPU market on its head and hurt resale of any DX10 cards.

    Interesting times.

I am only going to get a new DX11 graphics card if it has a similar(or lower) power consumption to my HD4830 and is twice the real world performance.

I'm hoping they have cracked the idle power consumption. They need to be at least matching Nvidia on this. The 48XX series is pretty dire in this respect.

Noise is what put me of the 4890 series. Great card but far too noisy.

    Re: HD 4890 or GTX295

The 4890 is only noisy because ATI upped the fan speed to stop people bitching about the (harmless) high temps. Turn the fan speed back down yourself and it's just as quiet as a 4870. Still, we'll have to see what the next gen offers. I too am hoping for lower idle power consumption, especially for when the powerplay bug rears its ugly head...
