HIS 4890 Squealing & Buzzing Help

Hi, I bought a HIS 4890 from scan when it was on offer a few days ago. I setup the card today and its really noisy. I am familiar with coil whine etc and usually this does not occur during actual gameplay and only in the menus of a few games. I recently returned a 4850 and this was a replacement for it. The 4850 was much quieter when squealing than this card. Also this card buzzes in game play.

Usually when this happens in games I enable vsync and that stops it. However this card is still buzzing when vsync is enable. What can I do with this problem?

This may be the capacitors on the card. If so, there's very little that can be done other than to return this one as well.
Are you sure that it's not the fan ?
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

I stopped the fan a for little and it was still doing it. Also when the vsync is on. Its buzzes in small spikes, basically its not constant with vsync. Rather annoying that every card I have had makes noises.

How does scan work with returns. Its my first time with them.

Quite unlikely, but certainly something that should be looked at.... sure it's not the PSU struggling?

What is your PSU BTW?? The reason I am asking is that like the previous poster said the sounds could be due to your PSU struggling.

Re: HIS 4890 Squealing & Buzzing Help

    PSU is corsair TX 650W.
The graphics card makes a buzzing not squealing. It only squeals in ati tool and menu of games.
The buzzing happens in games I played crysis and css so far and both make buzzing during the actual game play. I put on vsync and it still there.

Vsync only helps on the squealing in the menus. But the buzzing still continues.
In furmark stababilty test it makes a hizzing sound. Its not the fan cause it stopped it and same noise.

Re: HIS 4890 Squealing & Buzzing Help

I have had two cards prior to this one and both use to squeal. However I could remove this squeal by enabling vsync. The 4890 also squeals. However with vsync it doesnt. Although the 4890 also buzzes and hisses regardless of wether vsync is on or off. This is a problem to me.

Also I have two corsair 650W power supplies and both use to buzz with my 4850 during ati-tool. I talked to corsair and they said it could be because of dirty power. I need to test it with a different out just to see.

The buzzing with the card is the annoying bit. It is constant throughout crysis warhead and comes in small spikes in css(when players are on screen). Also in furmark it hisses/buzzes very loudly

Re: HIS 4890 Squealing & Buzzing Help

Recently built 2 system, both based on a corsair TX650 one with a Asus 4890 one with a powercolour 4890 and both do the exact same thing as the ops, the powercolour more so then the asus. Again it seems directly related to whats on screen and how much strain is put on the GFX card.

Seems quite a common problem on google for the 4890 to have. Both the people i built the PCs for use headphones anyway so are happy to let it be.

I tried on 3 outlets now and all are the same. I will try the other power supply and see if its still there Which I bet it is.

Normally I don't notice the buzzing, but yesterday when finding the max power consumption of my machine in "Will a 650W PSU do? " one or both HD 4870s were buzzing louder than usual.

Maybe a coincidence that I've also got a Corsair TX 650W!

Have you tried with one card only. Can you please do that just to see. What is it in technical terms that could be causing this??

Re: HIS 4890 Squealing & Buzzing Help

Both cards on their own buzz when stressed, they also whine quietly under normal GPU load and on some game menus. I can't tell for sure if both cards are making the exact same noise though, this is the first time I've operated two HD 4870s which if both buzzed would have resulted in the louder buzzing that I noticed.

Every recent graphics card I've owned also made similar noises including the HD4850, 8800GTS and 8800GT. It's probably nothing to worry about, many others experience the same.

Re: HIS 4890 Squealing & Buzzing Help

I have had a 8800GT and A 4850 and both those cards use to squeal. However they did not buzz during gameplay or furmark. This 4890 buzzes in gameplay and furmark and that is what annoys me. Squealing can be eliminated by vsync. But the buzzing is not affected whatso ever.

Re: HIS 4890 Squealing & Buzzing Help

Judging by the nature of the buzzing sound it's probably produced by one of the larger components on the card. I'd investigate this myself but having two cards sandwiched together it isn't easy to locate the source of the noise.
