8600GT failling - what Graphics Card to get?

It seems my 8600GT is failing, so it's worth me getting a new graphics card, so I'd like to ask what people would suggest?

I'm thinking a budget of £100 maximum (inc. delivery) - my usual display resolution is 1920x1200, but I'm not really a gamer, more likely to watch HD video off my Blu-Ray discs, but hopefully it would be good enough to handle something if I changed my mind (maybe something like Arma2, I don't know for sure).

System specs are on the left hand side if needed

    Thanks

Re: 8600GT failling - what Graphics Card to get?

Ive tried to stick clsoe to your budget, so here goes :
    GTX 260 896MB RAM
    Radeon 4850 512 MB RAM
    4870 1GB RAM

Also your entitled to get free postage as well becuase youve got over 20 posts! Performance will vary between games so check which card suits your games best, i have a GTX 260 and i can run Arma 2 on decent settings (system spec is at the side) - id take a guess and say the 4870 will do a very good job as well, maybe even better (than the GTX 260) due to the larger frame buffer Hope this helps.

Ive added the 4850 becuase it seems a bargain at that price!!!
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

An HD4870 is the best card with your budget.

You can get an HD4870 512mb for around £90:

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/169206

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/167332

You can get the 1gb version for just over £100:

Thanks for the suggestions - the 1GB one does seem tempting - would my VX450W definitely be powerful enough and have enough connectors though (I don't know how many that card might need)?

The VX450w should be able to run an HD4870.The HD4870 needs two connectors but it should come with a molex to PCI-E power connector too.

According to the PowerColor website there is not adaptor:

    http://www.powercolor.com/eng/produc...ProductID=5707

The adaptor costs around £4 delivered from Scan:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?W...source=froogle

It is cheaper on Ebay though:

Re: 8600GT failling - what Graphics Card to get?

However if you do cut out the option of gameing you'd be far better off with a lower powered card.
something like this 4550 with fanless heatsink would be good
    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/161559
    And only £35

Add in gaming at 1920x1200 and I'd look at the 4870 1gb at least.
But remember that this will effect both your power consumption and heat buildup inside the case.

Re: 8600GT failling - what Graphics Card to get?

Thanks - since I plan on it lasting as long as possible, I expect I probably will end up gaming at least a little at some point, so I've gone ahead and ordered the 4870 1GB from eBuyer

I'm hoping that heat buildup shouldn't be an issue - my case is a Xclio A380Plus V1, with the default 250mm and 360mm fans, as well as this extra 120mm fan, so hopefully that should be good enough.

You can use ATI Tray Tools to set custom 2D and 3D clocks and configure the software to engage the clocks automatically. You should be able to under clock the core although I am uncertain about the GDDR5 RAM.

Oh dear god I do hope that Sharkoon system power fan is not running at full speed, while I do love the Sharkoon fans as great performers for the cash and the power one throws out a hellish amount of air at full speed, it's also very loud.
I used to have two of them in my old case with both at full speed it sounded like a vacum cleaner and if I connected a hose to the front I could of used it as one.
The next day I went out and bought a fan controller

I believe it probably is on full since I don't have a fan controller for it, but the noise doesn't bother me - I actually prefer having a bit of background noise (which that counts as to me).
