Malice - I meant to say this new driver update 11.a is, and I'm quoting AMD here:
"AMD will also release a new driver that will bring about considerable performance improvements to all Radeon HD 6000 series GPUs"
Really hope it works as I've shortlisted an XFX HD 6950 video card now that the price is going to drop!
The link I gave you is the new drivers 'temporary storage' name until it gets released tomorrow.
The driver has some big speed improvements and is being released tomorrow to tie in with Nvidia's release of their new GTX 560ti card.
Let me know how you get on please mate as I'd like to know as I'm after a 6950 myself as AMD is about to lower the prices so we should be seeing 2GB HD 6950's around the £150 mark :

I dont think that this issue affects too many cards as me and some friends bought 6950s and 70s and I haven't heard any of them complaining. also mine runs fine even unlocked...i wouldnt worry too much especially if it'll be around 150. it sounds very goodOriginally Posted by '
Benn advised that my PSU is not up to spec for this card???
Is this right?
Gr33nGecko has posted a message entitled New HIS 6950, Driver Problem??? Display Driver Stopped Responding? Win 7 64Bit.

As good as Enermax are, that particular PSU is not rated to run that card in that system unfortunately ..
It has x2 12v rails @ 22A MAX per rail = ~18A sustained .. ( Specs say 36A @ 12v ).
Your card draws about 16.6A under load, leaving you with just 1.3A sustained to power your hard drives, fans and everything else running off 12v1 ..
You need a better PSU ..
Hmmm, tricky to say. Assuming you have the older Liberty (not the newer Liberty II Eco, which has a higher rating on the 12v lines) it offers a combined 36A on the 2 12V lines, which means a total of 432W. Talking about the card "only leaving 1.3A" on one rail is nonsense though: it'll draw power evenly where necessary and your PSU will distibute it appropriately.
However, how old is the PSU? From what I can scratch up the Liberty is a 5 year old design, and if you've been using it with previous builds then it could be struggling through age rather than an inadequacy in design...
malice19 - do you have a mate with a beefier PSU who would either let you try your card in his PC or even better let you borrow his PSU?

Corsair TX750 on order
Thanks for the help, at least i know my PSU will not be at fault any more but unfortunately I’m still getting the same“Display Driver Stopped Responding and has recovered” when just doing day to day tasks in windows desktop.
On a plus note games are running 90% of the time including crysis that was not even loading up to the game menu before. Think its time to RMA the card back as advised but a bit worried as they advise that they will charge if no fault found? I have tested in 3 PCs and getting the same problem with driver not responding? All 3 were running Windows 7 Pro 64Bit. I can just see them testing it on a few games and charging me for no fault found... Wish i had another 6950 to test with to make sure it not just a windows 7 problem and to make sure its hardware at fault... : (
Have done another fresh install on Win 7 64Bit but with no joy.
So i might try installing back to Win XP but as ehhhhhhh posted him and his mates have had no problems and running on Win 7 64bit????
Hi
Have just done a fresh install of Win 7 Pro 64Bit again but this time only putting most basic need software on the PC like drivers and no other software. So no AV or windows updates at all and have found that my 6950 is preforming much better like 95% stable. Although i have been using Burn in test and configured the tests just to run 2D and 3D testing and am having mixed results.
If i have 2D and 3D on testing at the same time at 100% most of the time it will fail straight away and error. If i turn it down in the config to test at 90% it seems to to run fine?
So was wondering if you or any one who has a working HD 6950 can do me and others a favor by install Burn in test and confirm if yours fails on 100 load or not?

Would be greatly appreciate if you or any one that can try this out and confirm your results.
Cheers

sorry Malice I didn't notice the new posts (useless/very late thread update emails anyone? )
I'm gonna run the tests in a minute and get back with the results.
UPDATE:
It's passed the 3D test completely.
I noticed that even though I've set up the load to be "100" catalyst shows only 50% usage during the 3D test.
anyway no problems here
