um that comment on the Nvidia cards making Doom 3 run better are a little out of date since Carmack announced they removed the Nvidia optimizations for the game. Which ever you got for, both will crap on doom and hl2 If you are wanting opensource solutions like linux forget ati as their drivers are appauling if non-existant. Otherwise gaming wise the ATi is built for speed hence why no spec change such as dx9c and ps3 whereas the Nvidia card is built to take a step ahead and use the newer techs (PS3 aint a biggy same as PS2 but allows more instructions to be sent to it)

I have always used Nvidia for the simple fact they support older OpenGL games, ATi I have found to be shocking with older OpenGL games but since the 9800 and the latest cats this isn't much of an issue now. I would go ATi and the only reason being is to save money at the end of the day

i agree with Grey M@a, but only because of the money thing. At the end of the day i dont think there will be a huge performance diff between the two and both will be able to run games at max details for the nxt 12 - 18 months i would think.

Nvidia has a better driver team, thats a general rule. They have 64-bit and linux drivers that are damn good especially considering how small of a market both are. (64-bit still beta market!)

ATI has made huge leaps forward in their driver development and have resolved the issues that they used to have.

However, from playing with both recent driver sets. I like Nvidia's interface better, especially on 56.72 with the game profiles that you can set in the driver, and pop-up blocker, etc.

Lets not talk about price! Lets talk image quality! All I ever here is that Ati has better IQ!

I am running a 9800 Pro AIW and quality is great, But I read many new reviews and I saw some scary screan shots! The images on Nvidias new gen cards looked blocky still, And ati's was super smoth! Was up with that?

I too am waiting to buy the ATI XT..... I just cant wait! I'd love to try Nvidia but I know ATI and trust their cards so I will stick to them!

myth - from what I've seen the NV4x family had good quality.. some say the X800 did better, but I couldn't see much difference... The NV3x is another story, but that's old

If someone offered me a 6800GT and a X800pro right now, I'd take the 6800GT.

    If I was offered a 6800Ultra and a X800XT, I'd take the X800XT.

Read a lot of reviews, seems to be the deal. I'd still go with the X800XT even if I had a 480w PSU from a decent company, and didn't have to factor in the price of upgrading my 350w Antec SmartBlue.

I'll be getting an X800XT, mainly for Half Life II, but also Rome: Total War.

I need the ATI for my Dell 20 inch LCD, I found out that its native res is by far better looking! Too bad its native res is 1600-1200!

I have read in some reviews that when the image quality settings are turnd up on both cards that the ati out performs the nvidia at the higher res...

    Is this true?

In the X800XT vs 6800U battle, it seem like the XT is the faster when it's pushed... not by too far though. The 6800GT vs X800Pro the GT looks like it has the upper hand from what I've seen. But I believe all 4 of these cards will give you really nice performance in 1600x1200 even with some AA/AF on most current games...

And check out some reviews yourself aswell, there is alot of good reading out there about these cards

The 2 top end cards were very close in almost everything.
In a few places the X800XT took a lesser hit when Trilinear was applied (now we know why!) b/c of its "intelligent" Trilinear technique. (does less work - which isnt necesarily evil)

Also NV's AF is supposed to look better (I dont know from personal experience)

However, they are both almost identical in Image Quality for AA which wasnt the case with previous generations of NV.

    6800 GT 16 pipes @ 300/1000
    6800 Ultra 16 pipes @ 400-440/1100 (supposedly, reflashing core to 440Mhz)
    X800 Pro 12 pipes @ 475/900
    X800 XT 16 pipes @ 500/1100

I'm a proud follower of ATi kit these days. It appears that they are going from strength-to-strength!

Regardless of how close things are at the top, I would have to say it would be the ATi that my hard earned pennies would be spent on!
