    Is it worth upgrading?

    Hey guys,

I have just ordered myself the following..

    i7 3770k
    16GB Corsair.
    120GB SSD

those are the main points I guess to get a good answer, now the question is I currently have a ATi 6870 1GB. Should I bother spending more money on lets say a 7950 or a GTX 670?

Do you think the 6870 will have a enough life left it in coupled with that following set up and I mean lasting around another year?

    Thanks for any replies.

    Tom.

    Re: Is it worth upgrading?

If the PC is for gaming I would have ordered a Core i5 3570K and saved some cash. I would probably order a new PSU at some point if you are running a overclocked Core i7 and potentially a higher end graphics card. Regarding the graphics card,it depends on the games you play and the resolution you run them at.

    Re: Is it worth upgrading?

It's a whole new system, including PSU. I got the Corsair 650W which I assume is plenty.

Well I tried to play most games at 1920x1080 whenever I can as that's my native, I just wondering if it's worth buying it all together or just save the extra cash or getting one with the rest of it.

Depends what you play, but a 7870 almost doubles the fps of the 6870 in battlefield 3 so a 7950 would be a great upgrade. http://www.eurogamer.net/videos/batt...-vs-6870-video

Like technodean says it depends on what you play. Since most games are console ports so no need to upgrade & bad console ports will have poor frame rate due to bad/code optimization rather than your hardware. I'd wait as long as possible maybe when next gen consoles start coming through I'd get a better card then. Unless you feel you cards not upto the task now I'd wait.

The best thing is to upgrade the graphics card when you feel it is not enough to run the games you are playing.

Given that most games use a games engine that can deploy to multiple platforms natively, this isn't really an issue these days. 10 years ago it was, but not really now. You get the occasional game that has an issue, but anything that uses Unreal / Cry and so on won't.

Where do you get your data for "most games are console ports" from?

No scientific data just from playing games that look dated graphics wise. Not many games stretch my GTX570 and bought that 2-3 years ago. Games developed for PC like battlefield 3 will stretch but most don't and you'll find the ones that don't are all on 7 year old consoles.

sounds like a good idea. By the time you have really evaluated if your current card works, then the 8*** range should be out...

I think I'll stick with the 6870 for the time being then, it seems a capable card in the right system!

    Thanks all for replies.
