if you're using AGP definately something like the 6800 GT but if you aint planning to play games at 1600x1200 with AA and AF on max then the 6600gt is really good,
but is it any faster than a 9800pro?Originally Posted by Phalanx
It makes more sense to go 5800u to 6800GT but if you have a tight budget the 6600GT will run the DX9 codepath in HL2 whereas the 5800u will resort to the DX8 codepath. The game does look different with the various codepaths so if this is important to you then it may be worth it. The 6800 (non GT) for £170-180 would be a more worth while upgrade.
Linky HL2 pictures with DX8/DX9 codepaths

The 9800pro will run HL2 DX9 codepath and the performance about the same in most games so no reason to change. Probably some advantage to doom3 on the 6600GT but nothing to worry about.
