Is it worth upgrading?

Well as you can see in my sig I do not have the newest rig in the world. I have been thinking of upgrading to a newer shuttle which will accept an AMD 64 cpu, but this means I need a new HDD too and perhaps new memory as well and it all seems very pricey for not much of a gain. I really like to run my games in 1280x1024 and X2 runs like a b*tch at these settings. Would it be better to hold out for the next gen GFX cards instead of a full upgrade?

That rig will run anything for a while. Do you overclock? If so a mobile barton would drop in there lovely! Just look at the one in my sig.

I cannot overclock it and keep it stable, I believe this is because I have a crappy psu.

i assume by 2x you mean anti aliasing but im just wondering why it runs like a bitch,i have 2 rigs very similar to ures i have a radeon 9800 in 1 shuttle and a 9800pro in another and i can run anything at 1600x1200 using upto 6x depending on the game (race driver 2/vice city/nfsu etc) i rarely even change it from 6xaa and 4xaf on either card and still manage to get a fast smooth game.

i shouldnt see why ude need to upgrade that rig for a while yet as it shud be more than capable for atleast another year yet and thats if technology keeps flying the way it is,ure radeon and xp2500 shud easily serve u well for a while.

save ure cash cos its not worth it for the meager boost in performance.

So would it be worth upgrading to a 6800 when they are out and keeping the rig as it is, do I really need a mobo that can do x8 AGP?
I guess it would also be worth me getting a Silent X psu so I can overclock my cpu.

A lot of 2500 Bartons will do 11x200 to give you XP3200 speeds easily enough. I'd go for the PSU first, if you can open your fsb to 200 you should see a reasonable increase for relatively little cost.

I agree I didnt have any problem turning to 200fsb and I still got the 200w psu

I have the A64 system. If your RAM is PC3200 then that will work fine as well as your HDD. The board has IDE and SATA.

If you fancy it buy a 250W PSU for your shuttle then try overclocking 166->200FSB trick.

I had 2 x SN45G's with 2500+ Bartons, one clocked to 3000+ speeds, the other would have none of it.

Unless you do some 'savage' encoding its not worth upgrading yet, wait about 6-9 months for 939 pin A64's and new gfx cards to go down a bit.

Theres nothing that your rig wont play smoothly (except Farcry at high resolutions), so dont worry about it.

As for X2 stick to low AA settings or lower the resolution a little? Does having it at a slightly lower resolution, lower the gameplay factor?

X2 is known to be slow in the gfx dept anyway, no specific reason just inefficient code.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I think that I will leave it for the mo but I will be upgrading to a X800XT as soon as they are available in the UK. I have a 17" TFT so my max resolution is 1280x1024 anyway so most stuff runs fine anyway. I just really like getting new GFX cards.
That means that my 9800PRO will be for sale as soon as I gewt the X800XT.
