Has anyone got the broken video acceleration units working in the 6800 line of cards?

I'm still getting 100% CPU utilisation despite trying everything

    These cards truly suck.

WMV HD is still completely borked irrespective of FW revision.

It's briefly covered by Hexus here:-

And there's a more detailed thread on NV news about it here:-

You know that it still not working on the the 6800GT and Ultra cards?

    From Anandtech:-

"We aren't as happy with it as we could have been, but we mostly have issue with the way NVIDIA handled the entire situation remaining quiet for far too long. Not to mention that there can't be too many happy 6800GT owners out there knowing that 6600GT owners will have lower CPU utilization when playing WMV9-HD files."
    http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2305&p=11

Nvidia have royally pissed me off. £300 for card that can't decode video properly and is twice as worse that a £140 card is nothing but a sick joke. I wonder if they're going to offer refunds?

Sure, it's annoying that the 6800GT still can't decode WMV9 properly... but I know I don't buy a new graphics card soully based on whether it can decode a Microsoft Video Codec.

I'm more worried about framerates in games.

WMV pah, I very rarely watch long videos in that format anyway.

Still nVidia have been very naughty with this...

Sure, most people don't buy a card solely for that purpose, but that are alot of people - including me - who want a card with all round capabilities especially if it costs £300.

There are a huge number of Nvidia diehards spitting nails over this issue - that forum link above is just one of many. If Nvidia, hadn't marketed this card as having that feature, no one would be bothered.

But they promised and marketed a feature that simply doesn't exist on the GT/Ultra. I know alot of people - myself included - that would never have bought a GT if this issue had been known. Lets not forget for 8 months, people had to put up with 100% CPU utilisation - which is pretty absurd for something with a 3ghz+ CPU - stuttering/jerky video with frame rates drops - and it wasn't just WMV that was affected - we're talking certain types of Xvid, DivX, MPEG2 encoded video. Even now, you still need a beta FW driver and the Nvidia decoder (which you have to pay for) and even it still doesn't work properly.

The whole issue just leaves a very bitter taste in my mouth - it's not like £300 is nothing either.

I see your point, and I understand.

Personally I can live with it, and will live with it when I get my 6800's. However, I can see why a lot of people are not going to be too pleased with nVidia right now.

ive got tha latest WHQL (official) non beta drivers from nvidia, its ok, but i get lines that go across the screen even playing a small movie, i am downloading <<step into liquid 1080 >> that i was advised to do to check the cpu utilisation!!!

but the lines i was talking about (horizontal) are semi coloured, and change position every so often, and are obvious when something moves over the line otherwise gaming is fine! (oced 6800le > vanilla)

nvidia hav just released the dvd decoder that is supposed to help, has anyone had a trial yet and seen what it is like?

i am a bit dubious, i think nvidia should ship it free to all that have a 'non fully functioning 6800' anyway im in the clan and im looking around for solutions!

Just playing a DivX movie then gives me 90-100% CPU usage on my 6800GT. Not really a problem that bothers me, although I would like it to be working as it should.
I don't mean to sound cold, or cruel, or vicious, but I am so that's the way it comes out.

Is there any problems for converting any file type to MPEG II for DVD's?

just an update on that <<step into liquid 1080>> demo i sed about, i got a constant 100% cpu usage! in this respect i am too pleased!

especially whn they want me to pay to make it work! > via their (nvidia) dvd decoder!
i shall continue waiting for their 'magic' drivers

    not good!

I don't think there's a straightforward answer to that one. If you have the latest Nvidia DVD decoder (which you have pay for) and the latest VPU enabled beta FW drivers, it's supposedly able to decode MPEG2. The problem is, Nvidia have been very vague on this issue and it's not clear exactly what they mean when they refer to decoding. In other words, does it mean encoding as well, or just decoding? Another problem you're going to face is decoding the source, which presumably isn't in MPEG2. Nvidia's silence on this issue is deafening. If you had a product that has all the features as described, I would have thought that they wouldn't have wasted a second in shouting from the rooftops about it. The fact that they're silent on the issue, evasive or restrictive in the information that they release, makes me suspect that alot of the original features which they marketed the GT/Ultra cards as having are simply F.U.B.A.R.'d

People across the web have reported a variety of problems and limitations in a range of different scenarios - both pre-patch and post-patch. I've tried a variety of encoding / decoding software - AutoGordian Knot, DVDx, DVD2MPG, DVD2AVI, ffdshow etc using a variety of codecs (including a beta Nvidia DVD encoder), and I have to say that the results have been very inconsistent - I'm still getting high CPU utilisation even with a 3200+, slow encoding speeds and dropped frames. One of the biggest difficulties in unravelling what is undoubtedly an absolute mess concerning the partially working /non-working VPU is the number of different software configurations out there.

    Bah.

I do a lot of Avi/Xvid to Divx to MPGEG II, so far an Fx5200 has been doing the job alrite, do all the Nvidia cards have the same problem or just the 6800 serise, if so BOLLOCKS and from what I've read, not much can be done about it yet.

It's just the 6800 line of cards (GT/Ultra seem to be most affected). The FX5200 will probably outpeform it

Put it this way - the video processor on the 6800GT/Ultra simply does not work in the way that Nvidia originally claimed. It's fundamentally broken or if you're being kind, very very limited in its abilities.

I've just played a DixV HD file and I'm getting 80%-85% CPU utilisation. And that's with a 3.0ghz P4 with 1GB ram, 6800GT etc. GPU temperatures simply do not rise - which suggests the GPU simply isn't doing anything. If you want to experiment yourself, you can try any of the clips at the end of this post and monitor CPU utilisation with Run > perfmon.msc

It's just so disappointing because DivX HD looks absolutely beautiful (forgive me the choice of pictures):-
