GTX 1080 prices: £600+ ?

Sadly I don't think we will be seeing any more companies entering the PC graphics market. Not ever.

There are a few left in mobile, but even then in practice it seems to be down to Qualcomm vs ARM and I expect them to stay firmly in mobile. That's largely why I don't understand people on some forums hoping for the death of AMD, how can they think life will be better once down to Intel vs Nvidia? Specially with the history between them, I wouldn't rate Nvidia's long term chance if they get Intel's focussed attention.

I suspect that is why Nvidia is raking in the money while they can, they could do with a war-chest for the times ahead if they can't get their ARM CPU to take off (which I really hope it does, it is one of the few really interesting designs of recent times).

I am sooooo much in agreement with you - we need AMD so badly and people are much too short-sighted to see what would happen if AMD were to disappear. Imagine the lack of development and the prices if there were no competition for Intel or Nvidia. I would love for a behemoth like IBM or Microsoft to go into partnership or allegiance with AMD and see what sort of PC and GPU market would evolve from AMD having access to deep pockets. Can but dream...

I'm wondering what the hybrid cards are going to cost, Overclockers has the evga hybrid at £689 which is pretty darn pricey. Availability has been so meagre though, unless other companies start offering preorders it's their market for now.

And they say a week in politics is a log time........ it seems a week in retailer gouging is even harsher! OC now have EVGA Hybrid at £749.99 as of today.

OC has MSI Seahawk at £698.99
Scan have MSI Seahawk X at £829.49

Is there any difference in hardware between these or is it just overclocking speeds? Could you not achieve the same performance just by tweaking the standard Seahawk in software?

Actually it's cheaper now then it was then, it's just more expensive for us because of the hammering of the pound caused by the leave vote.

Pre-brexit £689 was 1033.50USD, £749.99 now is 989USD.

I swear both Scan and ebuyer had several 1080s at < £600 at the end of the last week. I assume supply is still limited and prices subject to wild fluctuation depending on who's got stock and current demand. I reckon we'll need to wait another few weeks before the situation settles down.

For comparison, ebuyer seem to have stock of the reference RX 480 8GB currently, at £220, which is about right for the current exchange rate. Lots of other options, at higher prices, all on pre-order though.

Nvidia seem intent on pricing themselves out of the market. If people aren't buying them, then developers aren't going to optimise games for them. The market share is almost entirely in the £2-300 bracket.

Wait for AMD to release the 490. Or the 480 is also pretty damn good for the price when you look at dx12 and Vulkan performance.

Also, as to the whole £-thing, the 1070's are staying in the same ball park as they were before Brexit (some cheaper/some dearer) it's just the 1080 that's gotten expensive. It's likely a demand thing and all retailers/manufacturers will make the most of that situation.

I agree on both points and the 480 is very good bang/£. I want the 490 to do well, both performance and price-wise, as even though I have a 1070, the market needs it to do well. I bought the MSI Gaming X 1070 one day post-Brexit. I didn't need a crystal ball to see what would happen with the £ and pricing in general. I would agree that some of the price rises are down to the not so favourable exchange rates but some of the price rises are down to opportunistic price hikes blaming it on the less than favourable exchange rate. More than a few retailers are doing this...

I am in the process to build a new desktop and I really wanted to go full-in with a 1080, but the price is a bit steep. I might consider waiting for some Black Friday offer and hope.

I'm currently waiting for the GTX 10 series prices to come down too. But it's gotta be the 1070. Can't justify the price of a 1080!

Watching the unveil of the new 10series and seeing the price tags, specifically the 1080 i was very excited to hear that MSRP would be $599 which is about £480 and $699 for the founders edition, I waited for the initial hype buy to pass on the new release expecting the prices to fall in range of the suggested prices, disappointedly the 1080 founders edition sold by Nvidia is the cheapest i could find and just purchased two with the HB bridge, expecting some good results!

The best price i could find was from Nvidia for the founders edition is £620, is does have limited overclocking ability compared to after market cards but still a beast of a card.
