depends on your monitor mate
You should set the refresh rate to as high it will go without losing image quality (as some CRT's do, and assuming you have a CRT) The higher the refresh rate, the less damage it'll do to your eyes
Hi
its phillips 107E CRT
Same one as me I think... as the other guy said set it as high as possible (75?)Originally Posted by Wolfuk
A seperate question - does setting higher refresh shorten the life of the CRT?
the spec of the monitor isn;t amazing acording to the phillips web site but appears capable of 75hz

No, and it increases the life of your retinas.Originally Posted by poindextermatic
I run 60 at home on my TFTs, at work I run 100 on CRTs (they'll do 120, but I get less strobing from mains frequency interference at 100).
100hz for me at 1024*768 on my 17" monitor. Funny what you get used to, i started using the computers at work and it made my eyes go funny, checked settings and it was running at 60hz! Been running like that for 3 years apparently, how the operator hasn't gone blind i don't know.

85hz for me at 1024x768 on a CTX 17" monitor. Doesn't give me a headache.
The 60 Hz flicker is an interaction between the frequency of the mains supply
and the monitor refresh rate at 60 Hz.... So running your monitor at 60 Hz
shouldnt be done in america its not the same in the UK. Im not saying that
60 Hz is great.

60Hz flicker is mainly because your eyes pickup the refresh strobe, it's more to do with the phosphurs used than main frequency. As you raise the speed your eyes can't really keep up. Even at 70Hz flicker can be quite painful. For comfortable use 75Hz is the bare minimum with 85+ giving a much better picture.
Having lived in a country with a 60 Hz system I have seen the difference of running
60 Hz in the UK compared to there.
It's a well known problem with computer CRTs than anything below 75Hz is bad for your eyes, and it's not related to 60Hz mains.
:S
I just set my monitor to 200Hz and it hasn't done anything yet, it's only a naff old "CTX Color Monitor" though
